filling monitor stands
      #932864 - 07/08/11 01:50 PM
Hi.

Finally, after almost a decade I got off my lazy arse, chopped my desk to fit my size and got the monitors to sit on STANDS.

The stands need a filling and the instructions say that ideal filling is "lead shots". Where do I get this? or is there a more common alternative?

Many thanks.

Shay.

Dry clean sand would do perfectly...

Some people use (non-"lightweight") cat litter.

Lead shot, or it's current ROHS equivalent is available from fishing tackle , and shotgun ammunition suppliers.

Sand mixed with Lead shot is another answer.....

or just sand...

any of the above will do.....

or "inert filler" as supplied by www.customdesign.co.uk

44(0)1912624646

which is what i now use.

it's heavier than sand...and slightly coarser , so less likely to leak out over time....

and ROHS friendly.

It probably depends upon the design, but if you're using sand, line where the base joins the uprights with blu-tak. Otherwise it creeps out. Forever!

Some hollow stands are provided with suitably sized plastic bags that you drop inside and then fill, thus preventing the creeping menace (works for me with dry sand anyway )

That sounds like an even easier solution. Also worth noting that sand from the beach comes to life when it gets warm...another false economy I won't be allowed to forget in a hurry.

Many thanks guys! The tip about the blu-tak was just in time.

I asked for dry sand and when I got home found out it's plastering sand which is a bit different than what I expected, but I decided to use it anyway, at least temporary.

All the best.

Shay.

The phrase that pops back into my memory at this point is ‘oven-dried silver sand’

Apparently that’s the one to go for if you can get it, although as long as it’s dry and inert just go for what’s cheapest (although oxygen-free sand is supposed to result in a better transient response )

Only if you have the grains poured in the correct direction

Have you learned NOTHING from the Cornish Witches Martin!!!

The magic only works if you repeat the words out loud and often. It's not enough to believe, you must evangelise.
