Freeware sample/sound player new

I've sold one of my cheap controller keyboards on eBay to a newbie who is asking about what program he can use to play sounds with. I don't think he wants a DAW, just a cheap or free standalone program with bread-and-butter sounds that accepts MIDI signals. I don't know much about that end of the market -- can anyone recommend some freeware program along these lines?

Sampletank Free is worth considering. It has a standalone version.

Isn't Sampletank one of the free apps that you have to activate with a licence centre installed and so even if you decide not to purchase you end up with lingerware stuck on your computer?
