It's properly released then? Had my eye on it for a while, but it still says 3.77 on main download..

I suppose that will update any time now?

Errr yeah I was a bit quick off the Mark there. Official Anouncement should be soon.
It's gone from release candidate to 4.0 on the beta site if you know where to look.
Taking part in the whole Pre release testing has been a pleasure and an experience I've never had before in the commercial software world. Listen up other DAW developers, listening and interacting with your user base is not evil or wrong

Fair do's if they do. However it shouldn't matter if I'm at home or in a studio if I want support and bugs fixed should it? As a Cubase User since VST came out I never experienced a public beta or was asked what Features I needed. Most niggles and bugs only ended up fixed with paid upgrades. I guess paying the same price as a studio for my years of licensensing still makes me small fry. Things have improved with Steinberg in recent years but I'm still glad to see the end of that crap.

Yes!!

Also a new website design!

And I just saw this :

"REAPER 4 has just been released, but once 4.01 comes along -- sometime in the next couple of days -- we'll let you know what the latest changes are, right here."

Holy Moly! they are thinking of 4.01 already!!!!

That's pure dedication from an organisation that listens to the users.

So will we see a review in SOS next month?

Yeah, I remember when Logic was in this state (or "Notator Logic" as it was back then...)

Fun times.

Hi all. I tried Reaper a fair while ago and whilst I love the principal I didn't like it quite enough to embark on the required learning curve (my fingers have a decade of Cubase learning in them). This said, a lot of the Reaper plugins look to be rather clever and I'm wondering how users think they stack-up sonically against other included plugs and against 3rd party commercial options. I know I can download an eval version but I'd welcome any initial thoughts from anyone who's lived with them for a while and who regularly uses them in anger.

Cheers

Here's a present

They may not be pretty in the GUI department but they're transparent and work great. I use reaEQ a lot for surgical eq.

Just a word of caution. I used to use these quite a bit, but now I find they cause Cubase 6 on W7 to freeze.

I'm actually quite stunned byt hat - I asked the question because I would be prepared to pay the licence fee for Reaper to ge thte plugs if they are good quality and not locked to the host DAW.

'mazin' - and thanks Phil.

I'm on my way to ask this on the Cockos site but would appreciate opinion from here as well:

Will R4 place more of a load on ye Olde Laptoppe, resources being finite and all?

Initial perusal would indicate not but that might be a dangerous assumption.

Since the first alpha I've noticed very little extra load on my system.
Two things to be aware of.....
Choose a Track control panel view that doesn't show small meters at minimum track height (takes extra resources)
Turn off the new Realtime algo in ReaVerb (reverts back to old V3 behaviour)
Aside from that I don't see any extra hit worth mentioning.

It wouldn't surprise me if they get an update soon to the V4 Versions (not massive changes tbh but little things like a frequency graph in ReaEQ and little tweaks like that)

That's all very well, I would like to try Reaper (well I did try it back in the early days and it crashed again and again), but as a Cubase user, one of the most useful features is Patchname Scripts for my 5 hardware synths. I believe Both Cakewalk (.ins files) and Logic have similar utilities to the Patchname Scripts.

Does Reaper not have anything like Patchname scripts or is Reaper just used in audio recording rather than MIDI.

I have posed this question before on this forum and the only reply I got was 'try the Reaper Forum', which I did but that wasn't very helpful, well I couldn't find any reference to patchname scripts.

I can't answer that one easily as these day's in software only on the synth side of things.
I know reaper has .reabank files which can be loaded. In typical Reaper style these are human editable text files.
the default GM one starts like this.

I have no idea if that's useful though
I never used patchname scripts in Cubase either.

// .reabank files define MIDI bank/program (patch) information
// for specific hardware or software devices

// A bank entry lists the MSB, LSB, and bank name
// for all the patches that follow, until the next bank entry.

Bank 121 0 General MIDI

// A program entry simply lists the program number and patch name.

0 Acoustic Grand Piano
1 Bright Acoustic Piano
2 Electric Grand Piano
3 Honky-tonk Piano
4 Electric Piano 1
5 Electric Piano 2

This may be worth a read and may help

Thanks a mill - that seems just what am looking for, even if my synths aren't mentioned I don't mind making the reabank files myself, in fact just had a look at the reabank for the Korg 05R/W and it doesn't look a lot different from the Cubase Patchname Script

No problem, Like I say I haven't used them in anger so I don't know how they stack up on the usability side of things, hope they work out for you.

Again this isn't a feature I use or have even tried...
The 4.0 Release notes have this
Create fully automated surround mixes with multichannel track metering and the highly flexible ReaSurround plug-in. Apply rotations, transformations, and diffusions, and even automate the positions of the speakers themselves

So possibly!

Whilst I do not use Reaper much (v2.58 I think here on internet PC) it is something to keep an eye on. They are an interesting DAW manufacturer. I have been learning Wavelab 7 this evening. I say learning, it took about 45 mins tops to learn what I normally do. Everyone said it was really different and not intuitive, which I just dont get myself.

Enjoy Reaper V4.0

cheers

Have things really improved with Steinberg though? I just got shafted on LE4 and their registration scheme, now I can't even reinstall a working version.

I'll definitely like to give Ripper a try at this point.

Well maybe it hasn't then, I'd heard it has but jumped ship some time ago.
Trying Reaper, 3 bits of advice, right click everything, please read the user guide, install SWS extensions, take a long look in the actions list. Well that's 4 but let's not go all Spanish Inquesition here
It's so customisable if you spend the time making it work in a way that suits you it will pay dividends in the long run

I reverted to Sonar 7 until I decide which way to go but it eats a lot more resources than Cubase.

Any chance of the Reaper people making a software sampler as well. Halion 4 looks good but won't import Akai s5/6000, z4/z8. Kontakt looks even better and will import all Akai along with almost every other format, but exports £400 from the bank account. If the Repearites can do as good a job with a soft sampler as they have with Reaper it would be a winner am sure

I don't think it's high on their list, After all there's only 3 of them but Never say never..
I believe their of the opinion of keep it lean and mean (Hence the less than 6mb download) and also they're very aware of where they should put their efforts. after all the Softsampler world is full of excellent products (So is the DAW world I guess too..)
One of Reaper's Devs (Schwa) does make plugins on the side http://www.stillwellaudio.com/?page_id=28 so someday he and Scott Stillwell may turn their hand to it.

I'm having some trouble opening V3 files in V4 so am reverting til I've got a few current projects finished. I'm sure it's something simple and devs have been keen to explore on my behalf but it'll have to wait.

Otherwise v,v,cool.
