Hy to everyone, I have some issues with quallity of my live sound.
My band's
setup is as follows: 1. 2x Mark Audio as602 600W active full range speaker 2. 2x
P - audio passive 500W sub powered from phonic 1500W poweramp working in stereo mode 3. Behringer ddx3216 digital mixer 4. dbx 223 active crossover
Crossover
freq is set to 140 HZ. I can't explain what is wrong, but i'm not satisfied with
overall sound altough those are wery good quality speakers. Is there any rules on
setting cross fq and how you guys find the right fq to set it?

140Hz seems slightly high but it depends on the design of the sub. Take a look at the
specs for the sub to see if there is a suggested crossover frequency. James.

While your playing some music move the crossover point down until you start to hear the
difference and it sounds good I am going
to guess 90Hz - 100Hz is going to be about right..... knocking out some of that high bass
/ low mid honk found in cheaper speakers. Where is the HPF set though ?

HPF is not activeted on bass amps, alltough there are two options, 30 and 50 hz low cut.
At 50Hz I feel like loosing a lot of low end, and at 30 didn't feel a thing,
probably couse subs cannot reproduce under 40Hz.
I'll try some mods late today
and see if i can get something with lowering cross fq, and low cuting.
Do you
normaly use hpf on your system?
*i use a hpf on allmost all chanells while
mixing (some a lot, some just a bit). Is this in any case relevant with this issue?

HPF to get rid of very low frequencies is worth using on general principles. The sub
won't push enough air at that frequency to be audible - but the speaker will still be
moving, so you could over-excurse the speaker without realising it.
For a
possible what's-wrong, have you got compresssion/limiting/EQ on the DDX3216 main outs?
Also for the DDX3216, the preamps are very much the weakest link in the system.
If you can find an ADT1616 card (long since discontinued and very rare, unfortunately!)
then you can use any decent 8-input preamp/interface with ADAT outs to expand the DDX3216.
Critical stuff like vocals can then go though the outboard preamp and via ADAT to the
DDX3216, and less important mics (guitars, close mics on drums) or DIs can go into the
DDX3216's own inputs. If you can find an ADT1616 and you've got a bit of money spare,
this is *well* worth it!
If you do this, do make sure that whatever preamp
you get can be clocked from the DDX3216, either by a BNC wordclock cable, or from ADAT
outs from the DDX3216. My DDX3216 was very unhappy about losing external wordclock, so it
was much safer to use the DDX3216 as the clock master and get the preamps to sync to
that.
The DDX3216 is a bit short of outputs for busses and auxes, too. If
you get a preamp like the old Focusrite Octopre LE (or even the Behringer ADA8000,
although the preamps won't be that much of a step up from the DDX3216's own preamps
there), that can take in an ADAT and give you 8 extra outputs. Some audio interfaces can
do this in standalone mode, as can some preamps, but it's worth reading the specs
carefully to check.

First thing to do is put that 30Hz HPF on
buddy
Next is play around a little with the crossover points until your happy.
With
regs to high passing most channels ... well.... it depends on what your mic'ing and where
the HPF is set on your desk.

So i'm much heppier with the sound now when
i did this:
1. I switched 30Hz Low cut on sub amps 2. played with the
crossover fq at around 100- 120 3. rechecked hpf on each chanell 4. used my
Focusrite saffire pro 40 in standalone mode for mic preamps - HUUUGE diffrence!!!!
I gained much more quality and headroom in final mix. Thanks to you all !
