AE22 to replace old V8s. Recommendations new
      #936897 - 26/08/11 07:30 PM
Hello everyone,

I am a bedroom studio / edrummer / writer / mix hobbyist that happens to have a little extra cash for monitors. I'm in an 11 foot x 12 foot treated room with KRK V8s. The V8s were supposedly revealing for there day, but I cant hear near enough sonic info (compared to my Beyer 880s) and my mixes don't sound tight in translation.

I have a $2000 - $2500 US budget. I feel convinced that Mike Seniors argument for sealed boxes is the smartest move so my choices seem quite limited. In my internet searches ported boxes are much more popular and get much love... Focals, Nuemann kh120, Adams, etc seem to garner alot of purchases. But besides the NS10s, sealed boxes dont get as much mention. BTW I'd love to bump up to Neumann o300s but that puts me at $4000.

I'm reticent to go too small (Blue Desk) so I'm leaning towards AE22s plus their sub, but you can't find them over her to listen to. This means navigating the process of getting them to the US for a reasonable cost (thomanns) but if they are as revealing as people say, I should be set. I don't upgrade speakers often so I want to do this right.

Some added info: I mix my own music mainly, I have a mixcube coming (finally), Beyer 880 cans and plans to run REW5 again and RPG's Room Optimizer for new speaker placement.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations or thoughts.

speak to Acoustic Energy..... when last i spoke to them they were owned/headed up/somehow controlled , by an american (i think he was previously their US distributor for the hifi market) .... there MUST be some way of auditioning them......

everyone here knows of my love for the AE22+Sub combination....

that said, the upper management is primarily interested in the hifi market.... the pro division is very much the junior member.... and they let the original developing product manager go after he had a row with the US distributor... and said distributor bought control of the company.... and got his last word in the hard way....

office politics.... seems to be played different on that side of the pond...

..... shame, he's a great guy and really knows his stuff.... now splits his time between Kurt Mueller's (developing driver components for the whole world's speaker industry) and SP Acoustics. ...

That is a sad story. Too many litigators; ruining this country. Does this mean, because the original developing product manager is gone, that the product has lost any quality control?

BTW I have seen a post in a thread where a US distributor left a link, but his pricing was quite high. Thomanns is much more reasonable.

No, manufacture and QC was not his job...... the current head of service/tech is a mate of mine as well..... sound bloke.... always willing to go the extra mile if he can....

it's him that deals with any QC issues that arise....

Ray

Keep the V8's.

I have a pair of AE22's. Love them.

Before I bought them I did a lot of research, not easy. AE22's are sort of known in the business and that's it. Anyway, I spoke with Ian at HQ who mentioned that they had a pair at Real World Studios (Peter Gabriel). I was able to pin down the engineer who uses them who rated them very highly. I then bought some. I think I would have done so anyway just felt better coming from a pro sound engineer.

Here's the link.

Spot the V8's. He reckoned they were a good combination (the AE22 are a bit bass light).

Good luck.

Martin

You could buy some mixcubes to complement your V8s.

then you would have the close box midrange chaps and the V8 badboys. Which means you have both worlds nicely covered.
Mike loves his mixcubes.

thats what I would do
the AE22s are good and I like mine but recently I made some auratone copies and find myself now mainly switching between auratone copies and 824s
Just a thought.

Geoff
my speakers are auratone ripoffs, ae22s, M824s

Off duty BBQ: Thank you for the info. Sure would love to hear them. My next step might be to lock down an audition in Los Angeles, assuming I can find a store with inventory, and book a flight(!!)

Martin: Good to know. Those look like V6 Version 2 at Greenroom. I have the original V8s, and I can certainly hang on to them as additional reference. But I'd planned on picking up the AE sub as well so I could have full range and super tight in one package.

foge: I do have a Black Avantone Mixcube on order. Figured I'd need only one as my Beyer phones and speakers should cover my stereo referencing.

I know that folks like myself, (that can't, or don't want to take the time to go audition Focals, Adams, Neumanns and see if we can hear the difference in time domain, punch etc) are somewhat shooting ourselves in the foot. But I feel I can get very close in narrowing down a decision process with peoples help. So thank you.

I do hope that V8s are not a sleeping secret of the greats, because if that's the case I have to get my ears examined. If so, so be it
