Gigs for synth geeks... ;) new
      #937965 - 01/09/11 11:59 AM
Well, it's autumn (almost) so it's time to start filling the diary with lots of lovely gigs. So far, we have :

* Heaven 17 performing The Luxury Gap in it's entirety (October)
* Erasure (Oct/Nov)
* Ryuichi Sakamoto re-visiting the 1996 'Trio' format (Oct/Nov)
* Thomas Dolby is touring his new album 'Tales of a Floating City' (Nov)

I'm currently looking at 4 gigs in 3 weeks soon. Which is nice! (Just call me an old 80s farty)

Enjoy!

I wish I still had my copy of Thomas Dolby's 'Live Wireless' - how I let that video out of my grasp is beyond me!

My pleasure. The music's dated better than the clothes, and New Toy is a thing to behold...

Hee hee! Yes, I recall Ms Lovich looking for all the world like some nighmare Victorian doll given the gift of life!

Thanks to this thread, I've now dug this out and it's on now in the background while I work! Brilliant stuff!

Returning to the general thread, it's often struck me how the last few years have been the best ever time for opportunities to see eighties bands, possibly more so than during the eighties themselves! And for the most part, it's all been pretty decent stuff. Although Depeche Mode has become a bit of a tired old rock and roll circus and The Human League have cash cowed the same old show a little too much now for my liking, in recent years we've also had the original Duran Duran, Blancmange, John Foxx, Ultravox, OMD, vintage analogue Howard Jones, Yazoo, Numan back doing old stuff, A-ha, all analogue Jean Michel Jarre... even bloody Kajagoogoo! We don't live in bad times if you like this sort of stuff.

If I wanted to be _really_ sad, then I'd have gone to both the Cookham and Henley 80s weekends. The Cookham one was a local thing for the village but had Rick Astley and a couple of other good 80s names. The Henley Big Rewind this year looked amazingly funky - they even dug out China Crisis who I've not seen since the late 90s. Could have been a fun time... ah well...

yes... I can't resist: they are not touring this year, but Ultravox is back I saw them last year in Paradiso (Amsterdam) and they are currently working an a new album. Big chance that a tour will follow!

Their show was great (although the sound engineer screwed up!) and apart from the MacBook Pro's running Mainstage and 30 years of time leap I was back in the 80's

Oh yes, I saw Ultravox at Bournemouth on their last tour - so excited about a new album and I hope they tour again to promote it, Billie is a bit of a hero of mine as is Vince Clarke - missed Yazoo so going to see Erasure in Southampton. Yep is sure is a great time for 80's icons!!

I saw OMD play in Brighton last year.

Best bit : they played "Messages" (what a tune)

Most puzzling bit : a member of the audience threw her (massive) bra at the band. Oh well, it takes all sorts, I guess :-)
