Questions about Mac Keyboard and Keys new
      #938350 - 03/09/11 07:38 AM
Hi

I've just been just been doing a little 'housekeeping' in Logic: learning new Key Commands, changing my templates, improving my Screensets etc. - and some questions cropped up.

• In Mac dialogue/warning boxes about things like saving, can you choose on a keyboard the grey 'highlighted' options? Or do you have to use the mouse. I think in Windows you can tab between buttons and then press return.

• What's the easiest way of keying the ♭ character? At the moment I use Character Viewer - but it's cumbersome - and I do wish it was as simple as keying Option something. Can this be customised?

• What's the ⎋ character? I saw it in Key Commands in Logic and I don't even know what key it represents.

Help appreciated. Small issues, but some of these have been bugging me for years.

Cheers

Marcus

Any Highlighted button as you displayed works by hitting return

So how can I move the highlighting from one button to another? I seem to remember on Windows you use Tab. Cancel is easy enough because you can use Esc - but on more complicated dialogues I can't find a way round.

You want control-tab for this. Enter selects.

The easiest way I know of is to use OS X's automatic correction feature. If you go to System Preferences, Language and Text, Text you get a list (on the right) of character's that OS X will automatically replace. The top one, for instance, should be (c) which OS X will replace with the © symbol upon detection.

You can add your own auto corrections to this list. I have it set so that it will automatically replace with (b) with â™, and (s) with #. You have to find somewhere to copy and paste the relevant symbols from as I didn't seem to be able to find them in the available options.

I don't know if that is the easiest way but it works for me.

A quick search of google tells me this is the escape key. Which is nice to know.

Hope that all helps.

Si

In your system preferences, go to "keyboard" then select the "keyboard shortcuts" tab; at the bottom of the window there are two radio buttons: activate the one that says "All controls". This should now allow you to use the 'Tab' key to move from item to item in any dialog box. Windows style.

I don't know if anything's changed with Lion, but on my Snow Leopard system Tab moves forwards through options, Shift-Tab moves back, and Space selects the one you highlight - whereas Enter selects the original (automatically highlighted) option.

Thanks everybody - two trips to system preferences sorted those out.

Interesting about the ⎋ character; in fact I Googled it but got no answer. Maybe my next housekeeping job is to learn how to use Google properly.

Cheers
