Good insurance for home project studio, California, anyone?
      #939314 - 07/09/11 09:52 PM
I've been havin a hell of time trying to find an insurance policy for my home project studio to get my gear covered. Wondering if anyone in California or other states (I'm in Los Angeles) has had any luck with this. First I was looking at renter's policies but they have minimal coverage for music gear. Then I looked into business policies as I do some professional work but couldn't find anyone willing to cover over $10k worth of music gear. Sounds like music equipment is a real hot potato for insurance companies.

Anyone one had any luck with this?

CnC, I'm over here on the right coast and my homeowner's policy covers everything. The project studio and the 30 x 24 unattached building soundstage where I shoot videos. In fact, in April a storm blew a 60 foot cedar tree onto the building and crushed in the roof. The gear in racks didn't get wet and the lights dried out but the insurance company was prepared to replace it all. Since everything actually worked I didn't get the opportunity to upgrade!

I can't speak for California but I was out there last week and know that the main thriving business is medical weed so maybe the insurance companies are tightening their belts.

Btw 10k doesn't even cover the guitars!
Keep shopping homeowners' policies.

Best
Rick

In the UK you would go to specialist insurers for the best deals although I have mine on home insurance with a company that caters for one of the original home businesses, farming. Do you know any other local professional studios in your area who might tell you who they are insured with?

I'd agree with James for the UK - specialist insurance companies are safer, since they won't quibble when the worst comes to the worst and you make a claim (mine is with Hencilla Canworth, and they require an itemised list of your gear before they will give you a quote)

Many musicians seem to rely on their home contents cover, but in my experience few will cover music gear beyond a few thousand pounds/dollars
