Can multiple midi interfaces cause sync issues? new
      #939055 - 06/09/11 10:31 PM
Okay, posted this in Mac column but not sure if it was the right place

Is it possible that Mac experiences midi sync issues when having multiple midi interfaces connected?

Friend of mine has a protools setup and is of the opinion that if he doesn't use the midi port from the same interface as the audio interface (ie he uses the midi port on the protools 001) he gets sync issues...

I have also had issues with my Prophet 08 and access virus appeggiator syncing, as I use a seperate motu micro express Midi interface to my presonus sound card

Has anyone else encountered this issue?
Is there a around?

Walt

Mac OSX 10.4 2.4 GHZ dual core duo intel
Cubase studio 4
Presonus firebox
Motu micro express

P.S. Been a while since I posted, what happened to the vintage gear column?

Not sure what the problem is here Walt - if you’re sending MIDI data out from a DAW it will be likely to get sent out to sample accuracy, but by the time it emerges from a MIDI output socket it could be several milliseconds later, and with a typical timing jitter of up to 1mS.

Midi clock = slop, when generated by a DAW.

Hi guys

sorry for late reply.
Adam that article is quite enlightening.
I had seen these sync boxes before but not fully appreciated them
Not sure if i'd be parting with the cash for one in a hurry though, not exactly cheap.

I used to sequence with an atari so I know how sequencers can behave. Given its about 1/1000 th the power of the mac I now use, why was the atari better? (I know why but still can't accept it!)

I quickly forgot about the price when I heard the performance - jaw-dropping! The Sync Lock ended years of sloppy sync between my DIN and midi machines.
