I watched Submarine last night - good film, very British (in a really good way), and a great depiction of school life in the 80's.

The film focuses on the end of the Shogunate period in Japan and begins with an unsupported act of seppuku as a protest at the behaviour of the scion of a former Shogun. This movie borrows far more heavily from Kurosawa than the more comic-book tradition with a proper exposition of the mid-19th century politics that effect a gritty swords, bows (plus historically accurate rifled muskets) and more swords confrontations rather than unrealistic flying-through-the-air martial arts fantacism.

It is Seven Samurai with a modern FX budget and certainly worth a watch: achieving 5 stars from Time Out, the FT, Telegraph and the Independent on Sunday.

It has its failings in recasting samurai in perhaps a too-sympathetic light, presenting the dysfunction of an absolute feudal system / heirarchy in less than practical terms.

No doubt Hollywood will sign off on a budget to feck up its retelling shortly.

Thanks Reg, As much as I loved Crouching Tiger, that and Jet Li have got much to answer for. As with all creative cash cows crazy fight effects become more and more style over content. I like style but sheesh!!!! 13 assassins is now on my Lovefilm list. Anyway THIS is the best eastern movie. Dave

It would appear that your recommendation has been overlooked by many other critics! Could it be that it is not very Gnodab???

Saw 13 assasins last Saturday and have to say that even though I enjoyed the movie, I was somewhat underwhelmed (maybe due to high expectations). Followed the same predictable path as many others. And even though I do like my martial arts movies, the end battle was just too long for me. To me it didn't seem like the usual Takeshi Miike quality (I especially like the Audition).

Don't get me wrong, still a good movie, just not great/fantastic (IMHO).
