I use two back-up drives. One drive holds Time Machine back-ups - controlled by Time Machine Editor to only do one back-up per day. Restricting Time Machine to once a day, clearly has both advantages and disadvantages.

The other drive has Carbon Copy Cloner back-ups. Carbon Copy Cloner makes a clone of the computer's hard drive once a day. It doesn't do the complicated stuff that Time Machine does, but it's simpler and hopefully more reliable.

I use SuperDuper, both to run automatically scheduled clones/backups of drives, and to manually back stuff up into disk images.

Rock solid for me, I love it. I don't use Time Machine.

You need to occasionally test what you believe to be clones, in particular clones of System drives. Does the clone work as a start-up disk, do all apps open as they should?

Personally, I don't trust CCC, SuperDuper or even Time Machine. I've had bad experience with SuperDuper in particular. For the last years, I've been backing up manually, using Disk Utility. Apps such as CCC do not necessarily back up all files, or all files in the right order. If you do a bit of googling, you'll find articles about it.

Yes, Super Duper has (and does) clone bootable drives and system drives, and yes, I've tested it on many occasions.

I've heard of people having some issues with this in the past with old versions, but I don't know whether this still holds. I trust mine, but ymmv of course.

Have you got any reading on this? - I just googled, for instance, "Superduper unreliable" and found nothing at all...

I'm afraid not... I'm certain, though, that I read at least one article which detailed which visible, and importantly, invisible files get backed up by either/or CCC and SuperSuper, and which don't. Then there's also the issue of order of back-up, as in, some apps don't follow Apple protocol. I'll be damned if I can remember where I read it...

Basically, I took from it that Disk Utility, being an Apple app, is still the most reliable solution. YMMW, as ever.

SuperDuper does indeed ignore some files in a backup (there's a list of them in the log while it's working) because these are running caches and other low level stuff which *shouldn't* be backed up. Everything it should do, it backs up fine, in my experience (and I've been using it for some years now).

Just checking, because sometimes people can instill old learned knowledge which may not be factually correct any more.

Anyway - just reporting that I've have no problems with it, and I use it extensively...

I know about caches and stuff, however the article made a point of detailing how different back-up apps don't always do what they are supposed to (or what one would expect), and I remember quite clearly that the order of the backed up files was in question, too. I also seem to remember that SuperDuper did not fare well.

Anyways, I'm glad it's working for you.

Time Machine deletes the oldest files once the drive is out of space (or at least it does here). You may want to check why yours doesn't - it'll save you finding another backup solution (although a cloned drive is a very useful thing you've been ok with Time Machine up until now so why not continue if possible)...

I use Time Machine and a fab program called Chronosync.
It backs up at noon and at the end of play daily to an offsite harddrive. I also sync my projects at the end of the day to a portable USB drive which I then sync to a Drobo at home daily... call me a backup obsessive!!!
What I'm a big fan of is the way it smart updates to whatever media and warns you if you are writing old data over new e.t.c.
Highly rated!
