something like the Virus pulsing logo
      #941811 - 19/09/11 09:51 AM
Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this question.
I currently use a Virus Ti in a live situation and the flashing logo is really handy for the drummer to stay in sync on the rare occasions that I use the arp. I could possibly be switching the virus for another board which doesn't have this. So the question - does any one know of a standalone device that will read the midi clock and give a pulsing light along the lines of the Virus logo?
I hope I've made that clear
Cheers.

I do recall seeing visual metronomes but my searches come up blank, and I'm not sure that they have MIDI inputs.

However, there are a couple of options that might work.

First of all you could look at a MIDI to Light controller like this. I'm not sure if it will do exactly what you want, but the manufacturers might well be able to help.

Next up would be a budget DMX lighting controller like this one from Thomann. This has MIDI interfacing as well as lighting control. Again, it is not clear whether or not it can follow a MIDI clock, but Thomann should be able to tell you more.

And my third suggestion would be to go for a DIY solution. This example looks interesting and is designed to do exactly what you want. And I am certain you could achieve something similar using an Arduino which might be easier for a beginner.

Hope that helps.

The roland A110 springs to mind, but I'm not sure if it displays midi clock.

Thanks Andy, this does look rather interesting and neat - takes me back to the days of buying
audio kits from Maplins. Cheers!

Always glad to help

And if you do decide to go the DIY route don't forget we have the DIY forum here as well. There are some very experienced wireheads there who are very helpful and share their vast stores of knowledge and experience freely.

So feel free to start a thread there if you have any problems, or want to talk over a few ideas.

Have fun...
