Microkorg MIDI question new
      #942209 - 20/09/11 05:17 PM
My band are recording the last bits (synth, lead guitar and vocals) of our latest single on Sunday and the producer asked if we could get all the synth midi notes and things down to speed things up on sunday.

Question being (midi novice, apologies), do I take the MIDI out of the Microkorg, plug it into the MIDI in on my Pro 40 then it will act as a normal midi keyboard, or is it a tad more complicated than this? All we want to achieve is getting the notes down into logic, not worried about the sounds at the mo, but I don't have a midi keyboard and we want to play the parts in as opposed to programming them.

Help appreciated,

Cheers

Hi, I assume you are talking about a Saffire Pro 40? If so then you are correct. Midi is connected according to the 'flow' so if you want to send info from the Korg into the sequencer it's OUT of the korg to IN on the interface. To play back you will need to connect in the opposite way, OUT of the Saffire and IN to the Korg.
Be aware that if you connect the Korg and your interface up in a loop (so - if you make all the connections above) you could get a sort of feedback effect where notes you play are then echoed back into the Korg - it won't affect your recording of the midi info but it will have the notes you can play and probably sound a bit weird!
Hope that helps.
Cheers.

...but can be cured if the Korg has a 'Local Off' option. This effectively 'detaches' the Korg's keyboard from it's own sound generator, but allows it to generate MIDI output and respond to incoming MIDI messages. By doing this the Korg receives its own MIDI back from your DAW, so it only plays each note once.

Yep, like the good man says - you can turn local off from the front panel. Sometimes I like to leave it on to put the data into the daw, saves any latency problems.
