Quick M-Box 2 question? new
      #942592 - 22/09/11 03:26 PM
Hello again. Im considering upgrading from my old trusted Cubase VST32 to Pro-Tools LE and buying an M-Box 2 as my I/O.

I've seen a few advertised on eBay and some have the iLok key with the main box & some don't. I emailed a seller (who didn't include an iLok in his advert) and he said i won't need one as the box is just plug & play.

My question is, Does the M-Box 2 need an iLok key or not? also why would someone sell one with the key if it's not needed?

Regards

-Dave

The hardware itself does not require to be authorized by iLok or any other method. It is simply an I/O box.

iLok is more usually required for the software that utilizes the interface.

I am someway behind the upgrade path (PTLE 7.3) but my version of Protools is serial number authorized. Later versions might be different.

I can only assume that those sales that include an iLok come with software / plug-ins. Those without are presumably hardware only.

Thanks for your reply Phil. This particular box comes with Pro-Tools LE. I don't know which version yet (I have emailed the seller but no reply as yet)

PT LE7 will run without an iLok as long as you have the MBox connected. An iLok is required as authorisation to run many 3rd-party or extra plugins (purchased separately), but without it you will be able to use Pro Tools with the stock selection of plugins that are bundled.
An iLok was included with MBox2 bundles that included some additional plugins ('factory pack'?).

You might find that having an iLok is useful (if not now then maybe later) because it will open up these other options to you - also, if the seller has not opted to crossgrade to PT9 then you will have the option to do that (make sure you get the license transferred), and an iLok is now used as authorisation for PT9.

You can always get an iLok later though..

That's right the Mbox 2 doesn't need an Ilok key.

I bought my Mbox 2 a few years back and it was called 'Mbox 2 Factory' which was a little more expensive because it came with an Ilok and a few plug-ins from digidesign.
