Programme recomendations for acoustic recordings new
      #943031 - 25/09/11 07:24 AM
I've been using cubase for many years but 95% of the time I only record acoustic instruments, I never use the midi features,
What reording software would you recommend me to use if I were starting from scratch?

Good morning Winwill,
If you have been using Cubase for years why do you want to change? The MIDI part is not compulsory you know? You don't HAVE to use it!

Whatever, there are shedloads of cheap and free recording programs around. Most "famous" I suppose is Reaper but it do have MIDI! Audacity don't and if you want basic and free it is hard to beat. If you want something more "lush" and 8 tracks will do ya, download the free version of MAGIX Samplitude Silver.

But don't forget that MIDI does more than "synths". You can use a controller for your audio and a gizmo such as the Frontiers Tranzport is very handy for the lone recordist plus you can be in another room away from noisy computers and control the DAW.

What do you have as an Audio Interface? If upgrading, almost all AIs come with a "lite" DAW program. LE4 is the most common.

Dave.

Cubase is as good as any DAW, and you certainly don't need to use any of its MIDI features. Outside of my own work I don't use MIDI much, but it doesn't get in the way.

All of the major modern DAWs have their strengths and weaknesses, but they all do pretty much the same job. About the only choice you need to make is your computer platform, the way you want to work and the budget you want to allocate.

My favourite three amount to:
Cubase - for its familiarity, ease of use and extensive audio editing.
Pro Tools - for its credibility and compatibility.
Reaper - for its bang-for-bucks and portability (no dongle required).

There's no particular advantage to changing your DAW, simply because you're mainly recording acoustic music.

The things that will make a difference are your microphones, preamps, converters, monitoring and room acoustics.

Very true Bob but some softwares are less of a CPU strain, less "twitchy" for want of a better word and a few will run from a usb stick, eg Reaper. Then of course "un free" software either locks you into a single computer or you have to tote (and care for!) a blasted dongle!

Dave.

Thanks to all for your input, I'll stick with what I know and stay with cubase.
