Linux real time kernel?
      #944130 - 29/09/11 08:09 PM
I've been using UbuntuStudio 10.04 waiting for a newer release with a realtime kernel and a more modern ardour.
Does anyone have a good suggestion for a usable upgrade?
Opendaw is in Beta. Is it stable?
Thanks

For some time now I've been using vanilla debian squeeze, with just a pre-built RT kernel - unfortunately I can't remember where I got it from now

Although it's a bit of a bother, I then just dragged in all the music apps I wanted and left out the crap.

Open DAW has been rather a disappointment. Last time I tried it (2010 sometime) it wouldn't recognise my graphic card.

A lot of people swear by Arch Linux, but again it requires you to put together the bits you want, and as long as my current setup does what I want I'm not inclined to change it!

Sadly, Linux for musicians seems to actually be moving away from ordinary users. Fine if you know what you're doing, you can set up a DAW that will fly and knock spots of just about everything else. For the average muso, not so good

It wasn't me!
(Well, actually, it probably was)

Try out AVLinux. The maintainer of it is active in the Ardour forums and on various mailing lists, and from what I have heard the distribution is well regarded, meaning I do a lot less support for it than any other distro (Arch included) in ardour's chatroom.
