My laptop is making a humming noise, is it a ground loop? - just kidding

I decided to install some older software I have - ezdrummer and sampletank 2 I've got
2 setups, both with windows 7, one is 32bit, the other 64. With the 32bit setup, things go
smoothly. With the other 64bit, when I open cubase, the software isn't in the list of vst
instruments. I installed some vienna string library stuff on both - no problems. The boxes both say I need windows 2000 or xp. In short, does 64bit windows dislike
old software? It's not a big deal. I'm just interested.

Do you mean that you have two independent boots of Windows - one 32-bit, the other 64-bit?
Or that you have installed both versions of Cubase?
32-bit plugins that
aren't automatically recognised by Cubase-64 sometimes work with J-bridge. There's a demo
version you can try with.

I didn't explain it in the best way. I have 2 seperate computers. The 32bit
computer installs and recognises the software, 64 bit computer doesn't. The software
is pretty old though, needing windows 2000 or xp. The VSL software works with 32 or
64bit systems.
I hope I've made it easier to understand.

Hi Wiseau,
Still not entirely clear as to what your set-ups are: I'm assuming
one is Win7-32 with Cubase-32, the other is Win7-64 with Cubase-64??? Although it's also
possible to run Cubase-32 on Win7-64.
Anyway, I'm running Cubase5/6 64-bit on
Win7-64, and each seems to run fine with EZDrummer. I'm not really clear as to why you're
referring to EZDrummer as "old software": Toontrack just released a new patch for it a
week or two back, and it went native 64-bit about a year or so ago.
I reckon
your problem might be install paths for the VSTi DLL, and where Cubase is looking for
them. If you install a 64-bit application on 64-bit Windows, it installs to the \Program
Files\ path on your system by default. 32-bit applications install to \Program
Files(x86)\. So perhaps you're installing 32-bit EZDrummer to the latter, while Cubase-64
is looking for it in the former.
Patch EZDrummer up to the lastest 64-bit
release (you just install this on top of your existing 32-bit installation) and see if
that fixes things. If not, then check your VST settings in Cubase to see where it's
looking for the VSTs to be installed, and update as necessary.

If you have W7 Ultimate or Pro you can run an XP emulation (they say!). If like
me you have W7 Home try www.virtualbox.orgYou need an XP disc it seems but worth a
try? (Link from Computer active magazine #353 1-14 sept) Dave.
