How to decouple a drum kit from the floor?
      #944878 - 03/10/11 11:56 PM
I live in a large end terrace and have the space to set up a kit without annoying the neighbours too much.

Is there a way to decouple the kit from the floor so the kick drum isn't transferring the energy through the floor boards into next door?

Would a stage or drum riser be effective or am I wasting my time?

there are all sorts of ways to do it, with varying success.

Auralex sell a product called platfoam, which is intended to be put under a sheet based platform (MDF/Ply) ...

or it can be done with 100mm Rockwool slabs.... the resonant frequency and effectiveness will depend on the density of the rockwool, (or any other spring, ) the mass of the platform, and anything on it, and how hard the dynamic load *(drummer) is kicking....

or a sheet topped framework can be sat on springs,

the springs can be many things.... i've even done it with old tyres in the past.... (smelly unless repeatedly washed, then painted)

however, while this will help with impact noise transmission, it will do bugger all for airborne LF noise ... which is not insignificant either....
