Win 7 Pro DAW issues

I've just finished setting up my new Win 7 64 bit system and thought everything was going
well...
I'm running Cubase 5 32bit and all my plugins are 32bit. Everything ran
fine playing the Cubase demo tracks (I tested Cubase was working after each install) but
when I opened up one of my own tracks, it started playing then the audio totally cut out.
I'm getting the odd "popping" type sound from my speakers as if my FireWire
card is losing sync temporarily. This seems to happen when I'm installing something new or
"safely removing" an external hard drive, although sometimes it just happens seemingly
randomly. Is this an IRQ issue? The FireWire card is TI Chipset, OHCI compliant and ran
perfectly on my old system.
Would disabling (unmapping) my bog standard
soundcard on the motherboard do much?
Do I have to tweak anything in this day
and age with so much processing power and RAM?
Thanks.

Yes sounds like a dirty spammer above. Mate try disabling non-essential devices in device
manager (network, wireless, etc.) plus kill everything possible in terms of apps and
services (use msconfig or services.msc) and go from there...

Thanks for the reply.
Is there a way to disable the
network card etc... on just one user account on Windows 7?
I really don't want
to have to install a second OS this time round if I can get away with it.

On first look the popping sounds like you might have the buffer / latency settings too
low. The cutting out might be a device driver or it could be one of the VSTs not
playing ball. This is assuming that the popping is heard only in Cubase. Try
unloading the VSTs, save a copy and see if anything improves. Then add the VSTs back one
by one. If it's less than an i7 system (general observation not absolute to ALL
computers before this) you may be getting bottlnecks in the Front Side Bus resulting gaps
in the audio and midi data packages.Press Windows key and the pause button to see what
your system is if you don't know. Then tell us.

The
popping occurs randomly even when Cubase hasn't been loaded up. I think it's usually when
something might want to access the onboard soundcard possibly?
I've tried just
opening an empty track and record a single guitar track and it cuts out whilst recording
too.
I'm using a 2nd gen Intel i5-2300.
I've been Googling and
someone suggested changing the FireWire drivers to Legacy but that hasn't helped at all.

I've had a fair amount of success by disabling the "HD sound" in the BIOS.
It's no longer cutting out and losing sync with my interface but it is still a little
clicky/crackly every now and then. My buffer is set to 512. I got by with 512 on my old P4
system! Surely this can't be the problem!?

You should be able to get substantially lower. I know some Emu drivers stuttered at too
high!? levels so with that i3 try setting the buffers at 128 or even 64. Also one
time I went into Windows Sounds (when my sound went off) and just changed the sample rate
there. Good thing was I tried changing it back and it still worked so I guess I hit a bug
or something. That was with my i7 system, new at that time. It's no bad thng if all
your sample rates match by the way (Windows, soundcard, cubase). Turn off your Windows
system sounds as well as the onboard soundcard (if you have a better soundcard) as
whenever they are triggered (by emails etc) they will momentarily change the sample rate.

Thanks!
Yay, I have success. It's running flawlessly now.
I went to a few
websites to apply some minor tweaks... Disabling Windows sounds, boosting performance and
it would seem most importantly, disabling my wireless network card. That seems to be the
culprit giving me the odd audio glitch.
I made a shortcut on my desktop so I
can quickly right click and disable the card whenever I'm recording. Probably for the best
it's disabled as I get distracted quite easily from social networking sites!
