Guitar Rig 5 or a Blackstar HT-1 new
      #945384 - 05/10/11 06:39 PM
Hi Guys

Hope this is in the right place.

I currently use an M-Audio Profire 610 Interface, and Guitar Rig 5 Pro with Universal Audio Plugin's.

My question is,which would sound best for D.I recording,GR5 or a Blackstar HT-1 using the Emulated Out?

I can't use a Mic'd amp because of the neighbours.

Thanks

Alan

You can't even mic a 1W amp? I'd always go with the analogue option.

Best bet is demo both and see what you think

GR5, by a country mile!!!

As it happens we're using GR5 at the moment, the DI out on the Blackstar is "ok" at best. We have the Tubemeister here too, the Red Box DI on that is superb, hence it was recently voted as having the best DI out on the smaller/compact range of heads/combos.

Go to NI's site and listen to the demos, they're all from presets so there's no monkey business or polishing the turd.

Go to the Studio Devil website. Download their free British valve amp simulator. Then consider the purchase of Guitar Amp. Much cheaper than GR5, and to my ears, more authentic sounding. YMMV. I don't see the point of buying an amp just to use its emulated output! A Sansamp would be a more cost effective solution, especially the Liverpool model from the Character series. But do try out the British Valve Custom from Studio Devil. It's free, it's a JCM800, it rocks.

I've been using Amplitube 3 for a while, then, when I got Komplete 8, it happened to come with GR5, so I thought I'd give it a go out of curiousity.

I'm never using Amplitube 3 again - GR5 is in a different league.

The idea was to have the best of both worlds.

I could use the Blackstar for a different type of clean tone, and use the Cab's in GR5 in conjunction with the Blackstar.

I thought this would give me more choice?

Get both, as a matter of principle.

You will want (therefore NEED) even more stuff later, so why bother with artificial decisions now? If you even imply you have to make a choice now, future toys will come under even more scrutiny.

Rule Number One. If you are offered a choice between 2 items, both are available. If both are available, then take both.

I would totally go for the Blackstar.

my studio have all the guitarplug-ins. But since I bought a Tiny Terror and a Blackstar, I have NEVER, even once used the plug-ins..

I record with different types of mics, but for the Blackstar, a Royer 121 thru a Chandler TG-2 really kicks every plug-ins ass.. in a mather of minutes..

I dunno, maybe it's just me, but plugging guitar into amp, mic'ing it up with sm57, cranking preamp and then recording has some workflow kind of vibe I won't be able to substitute
with modeling software....
there's a vox 4vt (I am not sure the exact name)
it's 4w, pure class a, push-pull valve amp -
it sounds better then any modeled software imo (not talking about fx here)
and mostly - it gives you unbeatable pleasure to deal with sound..
I agree those modelling software are better and better,
but they are still like comparing real sex to sex telephone:)
when we talking about a guitar amp
