I am doing a presentation on granular synthesis and i need to know some basics before i go right into one lol. the thing that confuses me is the movement, why is there movement?! why is it not static if its the same wave being repeated?

It does sound a bit that way Georgia, although a Google search showed this SOS featuer explaining granular synthesis as the 4th link, so I don't think I'm giving much away by offering it to you here

www.soundonsound.com/sos/dec05/articles/granularworkshop.htm

I suspect much of your presentation can be researched from this, and you'll probably learn a lot in the process

Ha, one post Georgia ! Don't run away, it's just we like to poke fun with ppl who come on and ask a question that could be researched easily enough. On google. I've done it myself, a few times, but only on a tiny minority of my many posts.

Welcome Georgia

To start with, maybe you can have a look at this book:
http://mitpress.mit.edu/catalog/item/default.asp?tid=8587&ttype=2< br />

You should be careful about 3 things:

* there numerous approaches to granular synthesis, in terms of musical approach, conceptual approach and technical implementation; each of these approaches produces a particular musical result

* granular synthesis is one type of micro-sound process but there are some others

* a granulator is an effect that uses ideas from granular synthesis for processing any sound

Best

yeah i read through the articles and i am alot clearer. i understand that the samples are played faster and not squashed effecting the motion and not the pitch.

I am now racking my brains trying to find a sampler plug in called ktgranulater that will go on my mac but none of the files have installed. Its sayin choose application... Keep tryin i suppose.
Love the abysynth 5 to bits

Thnks alot

If you are still looking for one to use on your Mac, you want to have a look at this.

There is a demo I think, but I liked it and bought it

So did I Paul - here's my recent SOS review of Granite:

www.soundonsound.com/sos/may11/articles/plug-in-folder-0511.htm

The Mac version wasn't out at the time, so I'm pleased to hear that its' been released since

Hey Martin,
Im sure I read that issue, but missed that particular review! Or perhaps, being a Mac user I disregarded what perhaps seemed to be software only for PC's at the time.
I got Granite a couple of months ago. Ran very well with one small glitch (so small, I forgot what it was now) but the latest build runs pretty smooth as far as I can tell. In truth, im still a bit flummoxed by half of what is going on in there, but who cares, it sounds great! I'll have fun meddling with it for a long while yet..

Pleased to hear it - Granite is a great little utility that for me provides genuinely useful results
