RIP Betty Driver
      #947349 - 15/10/11 10:07 PM
I'm not a soap watcher: in fact I hate them.

However, I've just been watching archive of her singing at the start of her career.

So in the muso spirit: RIP Betty Driver and (even though you were a vegetarian) hope the hot pot is good upstairs!

Yes, my dear old mum tells me she was quite the talented star in her youth, but was royally ripped off along the way by husbands and managers...

I don't watch any soaps myself but I saw a lovely tribute to her on the BBC website yesterday. Someone who had been an extra on the 'Rovers Return' set years ago and had accidentally spilt a drink during rehearsals. Not knowing quite what to do he went up to Betty to ask her advice. Apparently she just said "don't worry luv" picked up a bar towel and cleaned it up herself! To have stayed in character like that is a testimony to her professionalism. And as a rounded and grounded person I think that little cameo says much. A long life well lived. She was clearly very much loved. RIP.

She was known for her good character, but I was quite surprised by the quality of her voice! You just never know do you. Those big pre-WWII numbers take a lot of pulling off! Just you, cracking it out, live. Good on 'er!
