      #947396 - 16/10/11 12:31 PM
hi guys i was just wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of the kind of drum samples / machines the kills use and the effects they put on them?

i've been messing around with a few samples from old boss and alesis drum machines but not had much luck in getting that gritty sound. mainly the sounds of the new album and not so much midnight boom

cheers,
chris

Bit crunchers give a gritty sound.

Hi,
as far as I know they use an old Akai MPC60 12bit sampler.
It sounds to me that they mainly use "acoustic drums" samples (as opposed to electronic, say like the classic 808, 909 etc)..the gritty-nes it's probably a mixture of old samples, 12bit sampler and maybe some processing..
anyway you should be able to achieve that with a thoughtful use of a bitreducer and some distortion-providing machine (if you're in the box Soundtoys's Decimator is really good at this)
Hope this helps,
Cheers
