Discernable difference in budget to medium priced soundcards
      #947629 - 17/10/11 09:07 PM
Hi,

I've just bought a Focusrite Saffire pro 40. Some of you may have read that I was having some problens with getting the firewire setup correctly on it.

However, leaving that aside, would the general consensus be that I would hear a clear improvement over my old 0404 PCI card? Not only sound quality but latency too?

I'm not even taking inputs etc., in to the consideration with this question more what I'm actually hearing and the improvement, if any, with the likes of latency.

Thanks.

Hi Dee!

Sadly no

You should be able to hear an improvement in audio quality compared with an Emu 0404 PCI card, but not that startling a difference since the Emu range were good already.

However, with regard to latency any PCI card could well have the edge over a Firewire-based model

Hmmmm....thanks Martin. I sense a return on the cards!! I'm not convinced that I have made a good call at all considering my modest setup with regards to inputs etc..,

update - I've requested a return/refund!! No point messing around any further. The £400 could be put to much better use and considering I've bought Cubase 6 and Halion 4 this week (good deal thankfully - details in another thread.....still praying I get them ) I have enough equipment already to get back to recording my tracks.

As a little aside - can anyone recommend a small good quality mixer with 2 decent mic preamps?

Thanks again Martin for your advice. I really do feel I was spending money just for the sake of it so I feel more content now that I have started the return process. I really am a bloody nightmare!!

Personally I'd look for an audio interface whose mic preamps I liked, or a standalone mic preamp rather than a small mixer - you'd have to pay a lot for a mixer to get one with preamps that sound better than those in a reasonable audio interface
