mxing down techniques for cubase 6 new
      #948933 - 24/10/11 01:23 PM
Hi,

Im Just getting the funds together to purchase Cubase 6 and possibly N.I Komplete 8 , or at least kontakt 5.

I just had a quick question regarding mix downs and whether the techniques for doing this have changed since soft samplers/intruments became the norm.

what I used to do was convert each midi track coming from each hardware instrument into audio , then run my effects, compression etc on each , then mix all of them down onto a final mix.

What is the best practice when using something like Kontakt when you have several complete midi tracks? , are we still looking to get them into audio format ? , or has the method changed ?

thanks.

Hi Jack

With cubase 6 its all very much done "in the box" these days. Software instrument midi tracks are mixed as you would any audio track then when you are ready to mixdown to a stereo track for mastering or if you master on the master bus as you go along you simply export a stero mixdown track from within the DAW. The midi tracks are then output to audio in the mix all in one step. Very easy.

Cubase 6 has designated instrument tracks (in addition to ordinary midi-tracks) which pretty much allow you to forget you're using a VSTi at all. All you really need for single output instruments, but lacks some automation options for those with multiple outs. There's also a single click freeze feature to save CPU power if you run out, which pretty much does what you used to do converting tracks to audio, but you can also un-freeze them if you need to edit.
