Okay can you stick a midi keyboard straight into it or do you need to put it through a computer first?

You can plug any MIDI keyboard into the Tetra, provided the keyboard has a proper MIDI output. Just make sure that the keyboard is transmitting on the same channel as the Tetra is receiving.

Whilst the Tetra has a USB interface, I'm not sure if you can just plug a USB controller keyboard straight into it, but the above solution is all you need.

...or a MIDI Theremin, a sonome ( www.theshapeofmusic.com ), or even a Motion Capture MIDI Controller Suit

Whilst I know nothing of the Tetra I would like to comment on MIDI outs on usb keyboards...
They don't all got them! Be careful what you buy if in that market since quite a few of the smaller, cheaper usb kbds have dropped the MIDI DIN.

In my setup I have an Evolution Ekeys49 (M-A do a clone) usb'ed to a P4 and the DIN goes to the MIDI input of a 2496 in a W7/64 pc, all works fine. In fact the P4 keeps usb power on even when shut down and so the Evo can be used on the w7 machine without the noisy old P4 blowing away.

You can buy wall rats that just put out usb power*and I would guess these would work just the same?

Dave. *(Hey! I got one somewhere, I will try it!)

Yes Dave, I should have been clearer when I stated proper MIDI out. I meant the DIN plug connector.

Anybody know if a USB MIDI connector could go straight to another USB, or does it require a computer in between? Just out of curiosity, as I run in an old DIN MIDI world!

Well you can't just connect a usb "A" to "A" lead twixt computers (don't know if it smokes but it is said not to work!) you need a usb "bridge". Kenton.co.uk now have a MIDI usb "host" box and that might be what you need, drop them an ee?

Dave.
