What harddrive?
      #951592 - 06/11/11 01:22 AM
Just had a samsung 1 tb spinpoint drive starting to fail on me (CRC errors)
Smart notification.

Got in touch with ebuyer and its still a week in warranty so back it goes.
A blessing seeing as the prices have rocketed recently......and i have no work.

I guess its gonna get replaced with the same. Potential future fail??

Prior to this i had a 320GB Seagate drive that just went dead with no warning.
Ive had a few maxtors before this that were ok but ended up dying too.

I havent tried western digital drives...
or hitachi.....
So my question is what brand do you go for for reliability?
What brand do you use?
What brand for realiability?

Doh!!! Just found out Maxtor have merged with Seagate.
Samsung are being sold to Seagate.
Aswell as Hitachi going to Western Digital.

So you`ll have to merge the results accordingly as it wont let me edit the poll.

A few points here.

You're mixing up companies that make drives (e.g WD) with companies that make boxes for drives (e.g Lacie). The drive inside a lacie box will not be made by lacie. It'll be made by a drive maker (maybe WD - I dunno - but suspect it changes according to which is the cheapest on the day).

Nowadays, the makes are pretty much of a muchness, in terms of reliability. And it shouldn't be relevant, assuming you have good backups. If a drive fails, just buy another (cheapo?) drive, and restore your backup. Everything cool. If on the other hand you *don't* have good backups, then irrespective of what make of drives you use, you WILL loose important data one day.

And finally, buying a drive at this point in time is likely to mean going with whatever you can find or afford, as most of the factories are now under water:

Points taken Chris.
I was just interested in what the forum users considered to be "The drives to use"
And yes backups are a god send very true...
Those that do not back up should do it.......

Well the previous best two options now seem to own everything else so we'll either see the market flatten out into everything being great, or the secondary names will be relegated to budget solutions.... I'd have said WD & Seagate up until now but we'll see how the consolidations play out.

Yep - I’ve been very happy with drives from both Western Digital and Seagate over the years

None of the above, I'd go for crucial if there was an option.

SSD that is.
