To buy or not to buy.....Logic Studio 9 new
      #953850 - 17/11/11 01:17 AM
Have been working on my project studio for a few weeks now and I now need to get a DAW sorted.

I had been using a friends copy of Logic Studio 9 to 'test drive' it and have been quite pleased with it so definately looking to go with Logic. However, seeing as Logic Studio 9 is now a couple of years old, and with rumours of Logic Studio X around the corner, I'm a bit reluctant to buy the current version.

I can get student discount so I can get Logic Studio 9 for £124.80 or Logic Express 9 for £57.60.

What I am wondering, is should I just go for Logic Studio 9 or should I buy Logic Express and use that until Logic X comes out?

If I buy Logic Studio 9, would I be likely to get a good proportion of my £124.80 back if I decided to sell it later on?

What would you guys do?

If it's the tool that suits your needs, then get it bought, get working and don't get concerned with 'what might have been'. Logic 9 is a hugely powerful, stable package - unless you're doing extraordinary things with your music it's unlikely that you're going to stretch its limits. Any new version of Logic is very likely to a) not have any fundamental work flow changes that will change your life, b) have a couple of new gimmicks which will look flash but not fundamentally change your life, and c) be a bit buggy, and so be irritating to use for the first few months of its life, until Apple release updates.

So, what's most important to you - getting on with making music (buy Logic 9 today), or worrying about missing out on something you know nothing about and could be waiting months for to appear (do nothing until Logic 10 is released. One day. Probably next year. In September)?

Can I get that in writing from Tim Cook?

@OP: There's been all kinds of speculation about how bad Logic X will be, so I won't echo it here. If you like Logic 9, and you're running leopard or snow leopard, I say get the full version of Logic 9 without the slightest thought of upgrading to either OSX Lion or Logic X, or of getting much, if any, money back if/when you do upgrade.

If I were eligible for a student discount on Logic 9 and our house burned down, that's what I'd do... (Happy Logic 8 user here.)

Some things to consider :

- Logic Express is the same software, just no Mainstage or convolution reverb and less content
- if you buy with an educational discount you can't upgrade it
- and selling it would be pointless as well

If you don't need the extra stuff and are likely to want to move to a newer version, then Express will be fine and cheaper. However, if you want to lock off your system for a long time and get lots of work done then buy the full version.

Either way, just write off the money you spend. It's easier in the long run

You can. Tho' if when the time comes, you're still eligible for edu price, then there's little point, as there's no discount on the upgrade, so it costs about the same as buying the full version again...

Anyway, as has been said, it's a no-brainer, particularly since you get the edu price.

Not strictly true - it's *almost* the same, there are a few other differences that may or may not be important, it's worth being aware of the differences.
