My (extremely basic) understanding of 64bit, is a 64 bit app allows the Mac to address ALL the RAM installed in the machine. This is limited to 4GB RAM in 32bit mode.
This can be very helpful if you use lots of plugins or have large sample libraries.
I'm sure others can give a more in depth reply - but that's basically it for music uses.

You're absolutely correct.

...yeah, 32bit/64bit is something that describes the internal workings of computing hardware, operating systems and applications. It has a bearing on the amount of memory the system can handle and the way certain types of processing are carried out. Nothing to do with the format of audio files.

Is there any advantage to having a Cubase 32 sequencer running within a 64 BIT OS, as opposed to a 32 BIT OS?

[Sorry to hi-jack, but I suppose this is kind of related to the original post ]

Thanks,

Mike.

Sounds like the answer is yes, in some circumstances. This article from Nov 2010 notes that: "... even running a 32-bit application in an emulated mode on a 64-bit OS gives much better performance than running it on a 32-bit OS..."
