Reliable click/backing track player for drummer

Hello guys, hope you're all well. A friend of mine is a semi-pro drummer and
always plays to backing tracks and is fed up of his iPod/iPhone/MacBook being less than
solid/reliable in a live environment. His budget is a low £150-£300. The new setup
needs to have headphone levels to hand, and preferably be rackmountable...asking a lot I
know. Thanks in advance! Mash

Something like this?If it has to be a rack, then the headphone control might not be in the best place
for him... Does it just need to do stereo playback, or does he want multiple outs? Alternatively, he could just go for a cheap handheld recorder and copy his backing
tracks onto them via SD card — then he could keep the recorder near him for easy
headphone level setting, and use the line-outs to go to FOH. Cheers, Chris PS. Monster Magnet on Friday!! \m/

Yeah I did see the Tascam, but thought it looked like it would be more at home in a
conferance room than a live environment? Like the idea of handheld recorder, didn't think
of that, would be good as made for a rough environment. It essetially needs
to perform as an iPod, he plays to the backtrack (with all automation drawn in for 'feel')
and hearing the band isn't important (Is this normal?). I wonder if there is a
portable recorder/player that can be held up with a mic stand, or attached to high hat
stand etc?

We have a contender: Zoom H2Although not brilliant for adjusting headphone
level, if it would even give enough level in the first place.

Many of
them have a fixing for a camera tripod and there are adaptors that will convert a tripod
thread into a mic stand thread.

I use a Zoom R16, SSD, around £200, and that's used for some fairly big tribute
bands for the clicks/backing tracks: reliable, also doubles as a DAW, easy to sync with
the PC, 8 track mixer (for the backing tracks) but will replay 16 tracks, headphones out,
etc, etc.

The new Roland SPD-SX. It's got a main stereo output and an additional stereo sub output
along with a metronome that can be routed to the drummers headphone output. It's got 2
gigabytes of storage and is designed to be hit so it's operation is not affected by
vibration and the drummer can start the tracks with sticks in hand.
It will be
worth the extra cost if it's a bit over your budget.
Here's how I'll be using
it.
Main out left - backing track in mono to FOH Main out right - custom
backing mix for singers in ear monitors Sub out left - click sample to for the band
that drummer hits in time with metronome goes to stage monitors Sub out right - bass
drum trigger sample to FOH to blend with bass drum mic Headphones out has click +
backing track. If the audio inputs can be sent to headphone mix only then that can blend
in an acoustic drum mix and any live instruments wanted by the drummer.
Seems
like a plan!
