Monitor Mixes - Keyboards
      #958714 - 13/12/11 12:10 PM
Hey all, so trying to hatch a plan to convert our keyboard player from using a noisy old Roland amp to monitor his keyboards to IEMs with a 'more me' function rather than use us an aux send for his personal mix. Here's my plan and I would really value any comments!

I'd also really like to add in submixing capabilities and lose our DI box. Currently both kbds go into the Roland amp and we take a line out from this via a Radial DI box and into the mixer (A&H mixwiz).

KBD Setup: Yamaha & Roland keyboards, both with unbalanced TS outputs

Possible solution: Both KBD outs (TS) into Behringer MX400 to balance output levels. Master TS out into Rolls PM351 INST IN.

Then as the PM351 has a transformer isolated output all I need to do is connect the LEFT out from the PM351 (KBD only) to the mixwiz to get the KBD submix for FOH and then connect a band mix to the LINE in on the 351.

KDB player can then increase kbd and band level on the 351 to control his mix independently of the FOH level and without needing his own mix from the mixwiz.

What do we think, will it work?

I presume that you want to mix sources from the desk with his keyboards, as otherwise you'd simply give him the headphone out of the keyboard amp?

Assuming this isn't the case, the best solution is to take a set of the main monitor outs from the desk, then use the direct outs from the keyboard channels from the desk and introduce those to any in-line mixer, i.e. RX1604 Behringer, then out to your Rolls headphone amp. The direct outs from your Mixwiz should be post fade, i.e. the volume level on these outs won't change if you adjust the volume of the associated channel.

It's very rare that I adjust keyboard volume when I'm playing live and that's because the perceived volume of keyboard sounds is very different so I adjust these on the keyboard itself to make sure they're all about the same.

Having a bit of a deja vu here but - isn't that pre fade?

Ours are prefade. That would work but seems a bit of a faff going to the mixer and then back again. Plus how would that work if we use a multicore?

Indeed, I did mean pre-fade.

You could go from keys, to line mixer, then the DI outs of the line mixer into your desk: the levels will remain constant from the line mixer, matey boy can fiddle with his own volume until the cows come home.

If your keyboard player also wants to hear sources from the mixer, i.e. vocals/guitar etc, then there's no other way of doing it without using the mixer at some point.
