Jan 2012 issue - Audio Freq Chart problem

Just received my subscription copy and took a look at the poster. I remember the charts
from the original magazine material and thought it was a great idea to put them on a
poster. I thought it was great to have a keyboard map showing the frequencies
of all the notes. But that chart is completely wrong. And not just consistently transposed
by, say, a 5th but utterly bonkers wrong. Using A 440 as a reference (because
it keeps the maths easy), the A in octave 8 is correct but all the other octaves are
wrong. Octave 6 doesn't even have a correct frequency for any A!! Count down 12 white
notes from A8 on the poster and you come to C7 which is labelled as 880Hz.. OOPS... Looks like someone has been given a list of all the note frequencies and forgotten
to cross out the black notes before mapping against the diagram. Andy

Hi Andy, We'd already spotted this and are on the case. Regrettably, a
production error caused a misalignment of numbers and letters. A revised — correct —
version will be going out in the Feb issue which is going to print in the next couple of
days. Regards, Matt.

It will be interesting to see how many of the faulty ones are still pinned up in
universities and audio colleges across the land in the months to come! Hugh

Ah, the classic "I was testing you" manoeuvre! I remember some of my teachers at school
using that one...

Will the new chart be available on-line for digital/print mag subscribers? I am still
awaiting delivery of my December issue, so it will be some time before I see a physical
copy in my mail box.

Hi, There seems to be problem with my frequency chart.... instead of a frequency chart I
have a full frontal of Paul White oiled up in a leather thong. Its a nice poster but will
it help me analyse my mixes? Dave

As a Gold Level subscriber you should get both the Paul poster and the chart. Silver Level
subscribers only get the chart. You should get in touch with Paul directly if you're
missing the poster, just describe it as you did here and he'll know what you're talking
about.
Cheers!

It's
10W-40... we warned him not to change the engine oil without Hugh's assistance.
5W-30 and 15W-40 can also be used to make your mixes smoother. Try them all and see
which sounds best to you

Good question. I'll put it to
the powers that be and someone will get back to you here.

Considering the content perhaps I'm not in such a hurry to receive the latest issues
In the
future I shall be very careful in opening any center-folds.

I tried playing some of my compositions using the new frequencies and they are much
improved. Thanks SOS for revising those boring, outdated notes to something that better
represents 21st century mankind!

2012 obviously hasn't started as a very good year for us has it?!
Can't really offer any excuses -- it's a very embarassing cock up despite the huge
amount of time and effort that went into proof-reading this re-made version.
All I can assume is that so much attention was focussed on correcting the technical
problem that led to the original error that this middle-A freq error slipped past
unoticed.
Most of the SOS management are out at the NAMM show at the moment
so they won't be able to discuss how to resolve this faux pas until next week... but I'm
sure we'll find some way of resolving it... even if it comes down to including a free
marker pen in the next issue along with precise instructions on how to write the numeral 4
neatly in the appropriate place!

Apologies to all concerned — that '400.000' is my error. I proofread it and signed it
off for print. I've checked that the numbers I submitted for layout were correct, so there
must have been a cut-and-paste or retyping error introduced at the page-makeup stage
(which happens, of course: I'm certainly not blaming our graphics department). I can only
assume that in the course of exhaustively checking all those six-digit numbers, I got to
'440.000' — the only one that I retain in my head, like many people — and somehow
'saw' it as correct, when it obviously wasn't. Normal process would have seen it
proofed by a second pair of eyes, but we were flat out on magazine production and I
decided to trust my own diligence and accuracy. Possibly not my best decision ever... My fault entirely. Sorry.
