AB/Y Pedal recommendations
I need to purchase one of these so I can run a
single guitar into 2 amps for recording without getting hum, noise etc... that I am
getting using a home made cable based setup
I think these are primarily passive
devices. And price appoears to range from £25 - £70ish and more .
Any
recommendations on the cheaper side of the above price range please, especially as this is
not something I plan to use a lot

I have the ART Coolswitch.
Its ok, not used it much but from what I remember it
seemed to introduce a bit of hum and dulled the signal a little in the tops for me.
Haven't really used it since....
If I was going to buy another I'd
probably look at the Radial one...

In the bargain basement, I'm using a Thomann one (branded as LeadFoot IIRC). It's not
broken yet, and not noticed it affecting tone. Do watch the sockets though - they have a
tendency to unscrew (although that's true of all nutted sockets).

Asked a similar question (but for live work) a couple of months ago - some very useful
tips in the replies (click here for the thread). HTH.

Thanks for the replies.
I have done a bit more research and thinking and have
decided the following
If I have hum / noise problems with my hard wired cable
set up then I am still going to get it with the AB/Y pedals that are purely switches, as
this is effectively the same solution.
The Radial one though has a isolation
transformer / buffer type design so I would have thought reduction or elimination of noise
would be better with this sort of design.
Out of interest, how would this be
approached in a professional studio

As I am a lazy sot (always have been, can't blame age for this one), I'd take two runs at
it & fix it in the mix. That allows better approach to the best configuration for each
tone.

Tony, I do like combining a clean tone with a crunch / distorted tone and I
think it adds to the depth of tone. So that my motivation for doing this.
I
have demoed this with the hum/noise and get what I want sound wise. And as I now want to
get serious with some recording, i.e. I am out of pre product / arrangement demos stage,
as I call them, I want to fix
I can place both amps in different rooms so have
no issue with separation
Reamping is an option, but I never really get the vibe
when recording a clean guitar. I can generally live without effects when recording
though.
Understand double tracking is an option and I can do this given time
and patience, but I quite often find I play stuff slightly differently second time
through.

Little Lehle.
Quiet and reliable. And built like a brick privy.

http://www.loooper.com/I
imported a pedal from these guys in the US and it was just as cheap as buying one in the
UK including duties. It's also the best laid out pedal I could find.

There's some pedal builders on eBay that
will do it cheaper, problem is that it will still have the some issues with hum as they'll
act the same as a wired solution.
Personally I'd get the Radial, or the Lehle
if I had deeper pockets.

In a studio you can take a DI and then split the signal inside the board, that was one of
the options. For the most part we recorded a DI signal and a mic signal onto
separate tracks, the DI later used as reamp source if needed. For my personal box I use a
Radial
Stereo Passive DI and the studio I workout of has been stocked with Groove Tubes Passive DI which I also like but they're becoming hard to
find. You could also try a Morley ABY pedal but that might be also a bit noisy.
