Guitar Amp Speaker 'Upgrade' versus New Amp? new
      #960556 - 24/12/11 05:00 PM
Hello….
I am new to the forum and this is my first question / post.

With regards to the performance of an ‘acoustic’ guitar amplifier, how much is determined by the quality of the amplifier versus the quality of the speaker? Specifically, I just purchased my first acoustic-electric guitar, a Yamaha FGX04 LTD under saddle piezo pick-up, which I am amplifying with a 30W practice amp. I bought the practice amp in 1989 to go with an MIK Squire Stratocaster electric guitar. Now in looking for a more appropriate acoustic guitar amplifier, I am wondering if a better / larger full range speaker installed in my existing amp cabinet or a satellite speaker cabinet connected to the amp speaker terminals would provide a noticeable improvement in the amplified sound of my acoustic guitar. What do you think of this idea and is there a speaker that would be recommended? Or should I just look for an entry level acoustic guitar amplifier and which one?

My current amp is a 1988 Rock Town 30W solid state, model 20, open back cabinet with a single six inch speaker. An eight inch speaker would fit in the cabinet. The amp has just volume, equalizer and distortion pots and a headphone jack. I currently only use the amp at home since I am a novice guitarist.

Thanks,

The electric guitar amp you're using is inappropriate for the task because it's colouring the sound in a way that's desirable for an electric but not an acoustic. An acoustic amp is basically a PA system in a combo format. You'd be better off looking at one of those, or possibly a keyboard amp.

Powered PA speaker also might do the trick. See if your guitar amp has fx return jack - you might plug in there effectively bypassing the preamp section and getting a cleaner signal.
