Firewire woe...
      #963222 - 11/01/12 11:00 AM
Oh woe....

/Nash teeth, /rend cloak

My 2009 iMac firewire port failed on me last night.

So as a studio machine it has become useless.

I have done all the things Apple suggested like trying a different peripheral in the port (didn't work), trying my interface in the macbook (did work) and then reset the PRAM and PMU on the iMac to no avail.

I have a genius bar appointment today. I fear it will be an expensive trip. And I will be main computer-less for some time.

... Of course I don't have Apple Care, that would have been far too sensible. Of course I intended to get it before the 2 year period ran out.

OK, self pity moment over... Back you your regular programming

I think you need to take applecare before 1 year is up from purchase

I too didn't take applecare out and my iMac died after 2.5 years

I got £100 parts and that was it

They diagnosed it as a logic board failure.

600 quid.

I don't think so.

I think more likely a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 for £120 on a USB port until later in the year when I can afford a new Mac.

600 QUID!?

Ouch! That's close to half a brand new iMac! My iMac warranty ran out on the 6th of this month and I too didn't get Apple care... fingers well and truly crossed nothing goes wrong.

Did you also try Western Computers down by Temple Meads? I know they are a reseller but they also do repairs.

I had Apple care a long time ago on a iBook (yes, iBook) and it's logic board also failed. It was like drawing blood from a stone to get them to replace it.

Are you covered by home insurance? Worth checking.

£600 will get you into mac mini territory. You can get the mini server for around that IIRC.

Same thing happened on my Powerbook - at least there I could add a second FW port via the PCMCIA slot, although it's not ideal as it's not there when booting, so no FW Target mode etc.

Usually when the FW ports go, it means a whole new motherboard, which is pricey (as you've found out)...

I too tried the pcmi thing, worked fine for disks etc, but not with my Fireface. Of course.

Just as a foot note,

Apple dont want to mend your old Mac.
They want to sell you another one.
So the price is ridiculous.

Sony & IBM owners take note, this attitude to pricing is not exclusive to Apple.

So back to the iMac:-
Logicboards for iMacs vary greatly, but few top £400.
The labour cost should not be any more than £100
If it does, ask the "engineer" why it takes SO long to replace a board and listen to the excuses.....

Any repair that is more than 50% of the current value of a working example, is highly questionable.
If you have a black-back or silver back iMac , you have a machine with some value, even if its faulty.
So consider flogging the broken machine for spares.
If you have a white iMac, give it away. Its not worth the hassle of flogging it.

With Mr Visa and Mr Barclaycard about to remind everyone that Christmas comes at a price, there are about to be some good deals on 2nd hand kit......

apple is a premium brand, and there isa reasonable expectration of longevity.

take it back to the store you bought it from (helps if it's an apple store) and insist on your rights under the sale of goods act, you can reasonably expect them to contribute to the costs of repair, trading standards will fill you in on the precise wording you need to use to back this up.

why it helps if it's apple store not a third party reseller??

coz at this point, after kicking it upstairs to management, they'll usually repair it free of charge, i've had several new screens, and a logic board , not to mention a couple of inverter boards replaced totally out of warranty, like this.

whereas a third party will usually be a pain in the ass to force to the table over it....

for this reason, i ALWAYS buy from the apple store.

Thanks Idris... In this case it was DV, and it was before their latest 4 year warranty

Quote:

DIGITAL VILLAGE FOUR YEAR WARRANTY (on new products purchased on or after 01/11/2009)

And as this particular iMac was provided by them in August of that year, I fall through that particular crack too.

Still, suppose it can't hurt to talk to them

Ouch! This kind of hammers home the case for the Mac Pro - if the onboard FW had gone awol on that, a new pcie FW board is dead cheap and quick to order. Yet another reason why we should constantly keep on at Apple to keep the line going ...
