Bass makes my Beyer phones crackle new
      #965359 - 21/01/12 11:56 AM
Probably a quicky, this - my Beyer DT150's left side crackles with bass frequencies over a relatively low volume. The right ear doesn't. It's not a problem with one specific jack output, as my other phones don't do this, and the 150s do it with a variety of gear.

I'm guessing I need a replacement driver, yes?

Possibly a new driver, but it's more likely that something has just become loose and is rattling, or maybe a wire is rubbing against teh cone. Carefully disassemble the earpiece and check for anything loose or rubbing.

A quick disassembly showed nothing obvious, but I moved the wire over a little and reassembled. It seems less crackly now, but still 'flappy' when louder low frequencies are played. The level it creeps in at is bordering on too loud for me, so keeping the volume lower seems to help prevent it. The effect is definitely not present in the other side though, and wearing the set backwards suggests its not my ears to blame!

Could well be a 'tired' bass driver then. If it was a 'quality headphone' then I'd recommend replacing both drivers rather than just one, and keeping the old 'good' driver as an emergency spare! But as it's a set of DT150s which aren't exactly the most revealing or cultured phones, replacing the faulty side should be sufficient.
