Which closed headphones come close to Sennheiser HD 650?
      #965826 - 23/01/12 03:47 PM
I recently bought a pair of Sennheiser HD650 headphones for mixing. They're great but make my Dt100s sound like I'm under a ton of mud! When recording vocals it's becoming increasingly difficult to feel inspired as the DT100s sound so poor in comparison. What closed headphones are people going for these days? I want something that limits bleeding but offers an inspiring sound.

Cheers

DT100s are famous for their robustness and cost.. not their quality. All the usual makers have decent closed-backed headphones in their catalogues, but none will sound quite as natural as the open-backed HD650s.

Try reading this article for some good suggestions of appropriate models:

I can't think of anything quite like the HD650, unless perhaps the discontinued HD250.

I use, mostly, the HD 25-1 as my closed headphones of choice nowadays.

I use the supplied optional velour earpads instead of the standard leatherette ones.

They certainly help in listening to detail, cut out sound well and I even use them for pleasuer on a portable.

I like the HD25-1 for the openness of the sound, relative to other closed-back models. But my favorite closed-back model, particularly for mixing duties, is the Sony MDR7520. They have the slight boxiness that even the best large closed-back models have, but they're ruthless in pinpointing details. Much less sedate than the earlier MDR7509, which I don't like so much. I've also been reasonably impressed by recent models from Shure.

One man's 'sedate' is another's 'hyped and shrill'...

I still like my 7509s... but I'd certainly second the suggestion for HD25s -- not the most comfortable headphone to wear for extended periods, but extremely good from a sound quality point of view.

Change the earpads to the supplied velour ones and the HD 25 are a lot more comfortable.

They are rugged as well - mine are about 22 years old now.

Oh - and Sennheiser launched lower impedance (25Ω) Silver and metalic blure versions recently at the CES show called the Amperior.

Hehe... point taken. Language always a problem in this field. But to be fair, it was used to describe one product relative to another, not to describe them in absolute terms.

It was less about pure frequency response, and more that I found the bass end rather 'flabby' in the 7509s for any material with a significant amount of bass detail in rock, pop and electronic styles. Sounded lovely listening to some old acoustic stuff by Neil Young, though, where the instruments weren't starti9ng and stopping so abruptly...

My impression (I've not measured anything) is that the 7520 sound 'faster'. Hence 'sedate' for the 7509s.

I found them more ruthless in exposing nasty details when confronted with a wall of guitar-laden rock than the HD25s. But I do still rate the HD25s very highly.

My HD 25s are still going strong after 19 years....Tho' they have been back for repairs required by me accidentally treading on cable and tugging the connection.

So that's another plus, they were worth the repair fee of 40 quid ish, ie compared favourably with buying something new for similar amount.

Of course, when I can afford them, I will probably try some 650s....

I use Sennheiser HD25-1 II's.

As it would appear does pretty much everyone else that's answered...
