iLok drivers problem in W7 64bit new
      #965796 - 23/01/12 01:21 PM
Hey there. So my upgrade to 64bit has gone pretty smooth so far. One thing that's annoying is that I can't seem to get my Soundtoys plugs working because of a driver problem with iLok. I get the following message in Cubase everytime.

Also, VST Bridge fails when I try to "Update Plugin Information" from the Devices menu, because of this iLok problem.

I've downloaded the latest drivers, which are supposed to work with W7 64 bit. I'm at a bit of a loss.

Any ideas, folks?

Hi Colin,

Are you sure you've actually installed the latest iLok drivers? I mention this because I had really annoying problems trying to do that recently, as I discussed here:

www.soundonsound.com/sos/jun11/articles/pc-notes-0611.htm#2

It turned out to be my anti-virus utility that was preventing the iLok drivers getting installed

I chucked my iLok in the drawer - most useless piece of junk I ever bought. Their web site refuses to acknowledge its presence in my PC. Their 'Help' people are as about as much use as a chocolate fireguard: they're happy they've trousered my money and couldn't give a damn now.

I was having this same problem when I got a new Waves plugin for my Pro Tools. My Pro Tools was locked up with that error message. I ended up re-installing Pro Tools since the program kept locking up. That did not work. I contacted iLok tech support and they did not know what to do. I finally realized what the problem was. There are two files to download on the iLok download page. This is the message I sent back to iLok tech on October 6, 2011, after I figured it out:
"The iLok download page fails to inform people that you must install the Driver BEFORE the Client Helper. Apparently, the Client Helper self-installs an old version of the iLok driver which then prevents the new driver from installing on a clean install."
I run Win7-64 bit, and this is not a Windows problem, merely and iLok problem. It is critical that you uninstall both "iLok Client Helper" and "License Support" (You will see Pace as the Publisher)from your computer under the uninstall programs option, then re-install iLok Driver, AND THEN INSTALL the Client Helper (Client Installer) program. Proper order is critical. The iLok drivers do in fact work very well in Win7-64 bit once they finally get installed.

Hi Tim, and welcome to the SOS Forums!

With posts like that you’re going to make lots of friends here

Thanks for reminding us of the correct order - to be honest I’ve had more trouble installing iLok drivers/support software than with any other product I own, and as you point out, the instructions provided are NOT foolproof

Thanks Martin and Tim.

iLok is such a frustrating technology.

I followed your suggested path Tim, to no avail. I even tried uninstalling Soundtoys and reinstalling them.

Martin, I've completely disabled my antivirus.

I'm sure if I run the bath and give the iLok a good scrub it'll work, right? RIGHT?

Me too, iLok seem to have 'updated' their website/procedures sometime ago and since then, as per usual with many IT updates/upgrades - they look jazzy but are made more pernickety in their operation.

When I upgraded Cubase, which meant using the newer iLok setup, it absolutely refused to acknowledge existence of Cubase nor the other products I had licenced. But I stumbled across a fix. When I upgraded Cubase, during the installation of course iLok went on the internet and downloaded latest gubbins, and at that point had acknowledged the existing licences resident on the key. The download completed and then went on to say 'no licensed products'.

I then pointed it towards my upgrade CD, which did find the licences again - phew and then iLok installed the new whatevers to get all my software acknowledged and activated again. But I cannot understand why these updates lead to so much fossicking about, especially gauling when a colleague of mine is now up to Cubase 5 downloaded from a crack site and has never paid a single penny piece for any version of Cubase. He has his installation up and running in a matter of a few minutes.

Mind you, it makes his music uber-bland to say the least - bought software makes you compose better I reckon as you're doing from a perspective of someone who knows the pain of shelling out £hundreds and £hundreds for a box with a DVD in it that has you cursing the day you came across it and it's discombobulated iLok conundrum.

Hi Colin:

I feel your pain. I really don't believe this is a SoundToys issue, but strictly an iLok issue due to your error message. I have never had issues with SoundToys running Win7-64 bit. When you go under your PC Control Panel, Programs, Uninstall a Program, please make sure there is nothing showing with PACE as a Publisher (in the Uninstall Programs window) after you uninstall the iLok drivers. If there is any part of iLok (PACE) left, you cannot do a clean install--which is required. I would also suggest that you reboot your computer after uninstall prior to attempting reinstall of iLok drivers. (I'm still waiting for iLok to be compatible with recent versions of FireFox 9 and Internet Explorer 9. I should not have to keep old browsers on my PC just to access the iLok site online.)

Just to put my mind at ease, I searched, uninstalled and deleted all mentions of PACE and iLok in my machine, rebooted, reinstalled, rebooted.

Same problem.

As mentioned previously this is really annoying as I too have friends who've downloaded cracks and had everything up and running within 20 mins. All we seem to get by being legit is problem after problem.

Hi Colin,

Sorry to hear you're still having problems, but I'm beginning to run out of suggestions

I've even read back through my 'Avoid Dongle Disasters' feature from SOS July 2008 and can't see anything there that might help:

www.soundonsound.com/sos/jul08/articles/dongles.htm

One thought though - since it only seems to be the SoundToys plug-ins that are giving you this problem, is it worth speaking to SoundToys to see if any of their other users has experienced something similar?

Hi Martin. Thanks for that link. I'll have a good read of that to see if I'm missing anything.

I'm having an email convo with Bob from Soundtoys at the moment, so I'll let y'all know if anything comes back.

I've also given PACE a detailed description and a link to this thread. Wouldn't it be nice to get a public response from the iLok folk?

Hello everyone,
I have been having the same problem with my Ilok2. After installing the driver and client helper several times(different order, with and without ilok in) I am still having no luck. Pace just wants me to do a RMA and send it in, but I would like to try to avoid this...Has anyone made any progress on their ilok issues? Thanks!

Some people report that the drivers from the pace website work better.

Hi
I had the same problem trying to update to Melodyne 2.
After following all the steps above- it turns out that the Internet browser you use for the onlione update can be the issue. IE9 and the lastest Fierefox do not work but Firefox 3.6 is fine and recognised the Ilok key straight away- update was then easy.

Hi Andy, and welcome to the SOS Forums!

Well that’s certainly worth a try for Colin and Robert - well done making your very first post such a helpful one

However, if it proves to be true then this information ought to be on the ilok.com web site in LARGE LETTERS

Currently it just states “Safari 4+, Firefox 3.5+, Internet Explorer 8+ recommended for best experience.”, which suggests that more recent versions of Firefox and IE should be fine

After using IE9 and the latest Firefox the site did warn me at some point that only Firefox 3.5 was verified for use- I can't remember when in the process this happened.

Great News!!!

Waves is finally acknowledging the numerous issues that all of us have had with iLok. In version 9 of its plugins, soon to be released, Waves is moving away from the requirement of iLok authorization. Hopefully, other plugin developers will soon follow Waves' lead. Could this spell the end of iLok? Read Waves news release at following link:

I just solved all my problems with having the iLok website recognize that my iLok was indeed installed by downloading a portable version of Firefox 3.6 from:

http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable/localization#legacy 36

After I installed I ran it from the install folder and was able to load my Soundtoys license.

My other browsers IE8, Chrome, and Firefox 9 would not connect up with my iLok fob.
