Bass guitar cabinet questions.

I am needing to get a cabinet to go with my bass amp and I have been juggling price, size,
weight, performance and cost against each other.
There are plenty of bargains
to be had among the older Trace Elliot cabs for example because the cost of moving the
thing is so great that you can pick up an older and heavier one for a good price.
I want something with a deep rather than a punchy sound and I was thinking of a 1 x 15.
Money is an issue but I can deal with reasonably big and a two man lift will be okay. What
I really want is a cab that can give me a strong low E....
Has anyone got any
suggestions?
Also, is it true that, in order to be able to produce a low enough
frequency, that a bass guitar cabinet needs to be of a certain minimum size?

Ah ok...not really my area. There are a lot of smaller 2x10's and 4x10's with ports which
kick out quite a bit of low end. In fact it's really frustrating trying to find one
without a port. From from what I understand a lot of people use a 1x15 with a 2x10 on top
to get the lows and the mids. Suppose that might be a way to make the thing more portable
that a single big speaker. J

i find 15's lack definition, but the do havea good strong low end.... as jack said, the
combination of a 2x10 and a 1x15 is popular....
personally though, a
4x10 is all i ever really find necessary.

I like a good 4x10, but there is a reason the Ampeg 8x10 is seen on so many major stages
around the world. It's built like a tank and can handle anything you throw at it and still
go 'Oomph' with style. In my stage crew days about 50% of bass rigs had the
Ampeg 8x10, 30% were Mesa Boogie, and Marshall was a more common sight than Trace Elliot.
Trace cabs were always lightweight I'm afraid. If you want something more
compact that still delivers, you have to look at Phil Jones. Nothing else comes close. Andy

"Also, is it true that, in order to be able to produce a low enough frequency, that a bass

No, the LF response of
a speaker will depend upon several factors, cabinet size, driver resonance and
sensitivity. You can go really low in a cubic foot, think hi fi subs, but you need
prodigious amplifiers, 1kW is not uncommon! You can trade SPL, cab size, sensitivity,
power handling, and distortion by the Sods Law ratio, i.e. if you want loud, low,
sensitive and clean you need big!
Should have included LF cutoff point!

The bass cabinet is the box with the speaker. It’s basically the last link in the chain
you control before the sound hits your ears, microphones, and the audience.

4x10 sounds great, but having said that I have always gigged with either one or two 15s
until very recently when for my back's sake I went to a 2x10" with a horn. Surprisingly large amount of bottom end if you get the right box and speakers. I used a
SWR Redhead combo for a brief but ecstatic time in the USA and that was superb. 2x10 with
horn. My cunning plan with my current cheapo Behringer cabinet was to use it till I
blew the speakers and replace them with Celestion neodymium ones. Two years on I
still haven't blown the speakers.
You just cant rely on Behringer for anything,
can you?
