It's absolutely lovely.
Well, it's technically not mine, but it's on long-term
loan — it belongs to the father of one of my bandmates, and when I was called upon to
play bass, it was lent to me on the condition that I fix it... The poor thing was in a
dire state, bridge was rusty, saddles were missing, fretboard covered in grunge so thick
the frets no longer protruded, the frets themselves had started oxidising...
So
I gave her some TLC and now she plays beautifully. Was rehearsing with her last night, and
it occurred to me that I've never felt so 'one with the instrument' as I do with this
Jazz. It's very heavy, and I'm sure there are more 'classic' models and years for Jazzes,
but I've never owned a vintage guitar or bass, and this one just seems to love the way I
play. I've got flatwounds on it, and tend to play with the neck p'up only, and the treble
rolled all the way down. The growl I can get from it by really digging in is just pure
power.
That is all, as you were!

I remember feeling the same way about an old Pearl Precision copy, my first bass. Should
never have sold it. ....And for that matter, about a mate's old 68 Goldtop Les
Paul. Pickups were non original and sounded crap, but my God, that ebony fretboard...
didnt have to look at it once, just wherever you put your fingers, the right note was
there... bloody fantastic. Should have bought it off him, etc etc...

Feel the same way about my Antoria Apollo - not exactly a classic maybe but made
in Japan at the Ibanez factory, & purchased by me around 79. Beautiful fretboard,
very playable & although it's been my second, or 3rd guitar for 20 years, been tuned
and left in all sorts of weird ways & the medium frets are worn down - it still plays
like a dream. I am however lusting after an SG...

Not a bass, but I've an Antoria Les Paul I bought in 76, second
hand. My Godin is a better guitar, but the old Antoria still feels "right"!

You have the instrument which is 'the one'. You are a very lucky person indeed.
Put some pictures of it if you can. I love the look of 70's Jazz basses, and
usually the more road battered the more beautiful they look to my eyes anyway!
DO NOT LET THE BASS GO! Offer however much the bandmate's dad might want for it...
In the number of instruments I've played and owned, I have never found a
instrument like that. I've briefly thought it but then had a problem at a later time
which made me question it's playability. The closest I have come to such a instrument was
a 1982 JV Series Squier Bass which I played for about a hour in a guitar shop. Owned
several Fender Basses afterwards of a greater prestige and monetary value but none were a
fraction of the JV Bass. To this day I still regret not buying it.

Here you go! Being modelled by yours truly (sorry about the funny angle, though in my
defence it turned out to be a particularly wonky evening...)

I bought a 62 precision second hand in 62. Had it stolen, got it back, sol.d it on to a
friend who I was reunited with recently. He had it stolen from him in 64. All three
of us (original owner me and Sim) agreed it was the best precision we had ever played.
And some greedy thieving git stole it & probably flogged it off for a few
quid.
Would love to know where it ended up though.
Only other thing
I have genuinely regretted selling was my 63 Wheat and Oxblood Tremolux.
