Equipment Question new
      #969960 - 13/02/12 06:16 PM
Hello SOS,
I'm interested in getting a used MAC G5 2.3 dual processor with a 10.4 OS computer with a Digi 002. Not exactly an upgrade but I like using the digi 002 to have a more hands-on feel when I'm doing mixes. I am on a tight budget so SOS do you feel this is the right gear to get? I will also be getting more equipment later on.

I am still using a G5 - it has no power or reliability issues. HOWEVER - you cannot get any software updates. You can load 10.5 onto a G5. Just about noone is supporting power pc processors anymore. Its a bit of a dead end buying one at this stage.

If you are looking at G5s, then go for the Quad, but if you can get a bit more money together get an Intel. The Mac Mini is pretty cheap.

so even with using a digi 002 with 7.4 protools version on that computer. It still wouldn't be a good investment to make? I currently have a mbox gen 3 with protools 8 running on my laptop, but i would rather have a desktop like computer for more complex mixing and on-board familiarization.

This thread gives an idea as to how powerful Macs are. The 2011 Quad Mac mini isn't the top of the range, but for the money it looks pretty good. It has been discussed in the Mac forum here http://www.soundonsound.com/forum/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=931428&Main=930 655

WOW this really helped. It makes the G5 I wanted to get look like dirt compared to the other ones lol.

No problem.

I still run a G5 Quad, because I've always been behind the curve on my Mac upgrades and now I'm kind of tied to a tower machine because of my UAD card. To upgrade to a Mini would also mean I have to get a UAD satellite, which weighing up the costs, it might be more efficient to by a Mac Pro second hand and just migrate into it.
