Is it safe to upgrade to OSX Lion?

Hi -
I searched and couldn't find a clear answer to this - is it safe to
upgrade to OSX Lion (I'm on 10.6.8)? I'm a Logic (latest version) user.
I'd
like to upgrade to get it done with, but wonder if there are any reasons why I should not
do so and whether Lion is by now stable and reliable?
Thanks, Kevin

Not for me - it depends on the hardware that you have. My ageing Saffire Pro is not
officially supported. What hardware do you have..?

Just upgraded my 2011 MBP - which doesn't have Logic on it - and I have to say I love it.
The OS has been reorganised around a tablet paradigm, and with the latest mutltitouch
trackpad it is appreciably more convenient. That said, I don't see how you could really
gain benefit unless you have a modern MBP, you buy a USB trackpad, or you have one of
those mice with the touch sensitive top. There are still a couple of bugettes with dialog
boxes not getting focus too. So although I have four more Lion licenses doing
nothing, while security updates are still coming out for SL I'm not planning on upgrading
on my music making Macs. Partly because I have Logic 8 which doesn't work properly on
Lion - I've got better things to be spending £140 on at the moment... Just my
two-pennies worth Steve

I have the latest 2011 MBP, 17", fastest available Quad i7, 8GB RAM, 512 GB SSD
(absolutely stunning machine).
It's more about the stability of the Lion OS
itself, and the stability of Logic with typical NI, Spectrasoncs, EastWest plugin on Lion
that I'm keen to know about - as in whether people are typically holding back or going
ahead with upgrading at this point.
Thanks, Kevin.

spoke to apple yesterday regarding some things for school - they say logic works well
under lion - but you need to upgrade to the latest version before you install lion (which
is 9.16 - which i believe you have done).....and because lion is now a .1 version, all the
problem bugs that occur with new OS seem to have been ironed out to a certain extent.
it's your 3rd party plugins and external audio devices which will be the issue -
whether they are compatible with lion or not.....
Most people have not
upgraded because they don't feel the need and run plugins that have not been upgraded to
work with lion...they have a stable system
The reason I'm considering the
upgrade is more to do with iBooks author and other non music related products - the system
i have is school owned and not just for recording audio - but if you are soley recording
audio with your machine and are happy with everything -
the benefit to you
is the ability to access more than 4gb of ram (which is only enabled with 64bit
logic/lion). I would also check each of your plugin websites to see about compatibility
and upgrades....which should be available
i'll be upgrading this week - will
report back with any issues!

Hi I just upgraded to a quadcore iMac last week. I was hoping to transfer Snow
Leopard from my time machine backup onto the new computer. However, it just restored my
apps etc (although apparently there is a way to 'downgrade') I was expecting the
worst to be honest but was pleasantly surprised. Im running Logic 9 with things like
Geist, Trilian, FM8 etc etc and I have to say so far, its been totally fine. I did seem to
have trouble getting East West Play to work, but in all fairness, I havent really spent
much time trying yet as ive been busy on another project. But its been totally fine,
performance is great, no crashing etc etc I downloaded all the updates for Lion and
had to update a couple of plugins (sonnox) but other than that... dare I say smooth
sailing

I have had a few problems with my Duet one since upgrading, as it doesn't play so well
with Maestro 2 (which you need in Lion). That said, that might have something to do with
the fact that I was aggregating it with an Apogee one to get extra outputs. This worked
fine(ish) under SL, but not at all well under Lion. Since unaggregating and just using
the Duet things have got better but not flawless like it was.
Also anyone else
noticed that they have taken Eucon support off the Apogee stuff sonce Avid bought
Euphonix? That was annoying...

i upgraded last weekend - on a macbook pro, oldish, 2.2 core2duo (silver keys) - using
focusrite saffire pro 24 dsp, works fine, logic and mainstage seem fine (havn't really
bashed them this week) the AU manager runs once you open them for the first time and i did
have to re-enter some authorisation codes (nomad factory, wave arts) but it wasn't too
much of a drama. Most of them work fine (BFD, Guitar rig, AAS etc..) I havn't tried the
specific plugs you mentioned - think its worth checking the manufacturers websites for
info.
Mostly lion is fine, it fixed an annoying bug in safari that i had where
a random scrunched graphic of websites you had been to would pop up when changing sites,
personally i have changed a few settings in system preferences that i didn't get on with
(reverse scrolling, and iOS style spelling auto-correct being the main cuprits as well as
auto-resume windows) Personally i don't use spaces but i think that some people have said
the way lion handles them is different (no comment!)
3 things worth mentioning
(even though you are probably aware of them)
1) check your system for power pc
apps - they won't work. They are in -about this mac -> software ->applications (my
version of MS office was old and had to go - however you can't run the uninstaller once
you upgrade as this is also powerpc - so i'd get rid of anything you dont want before you
dive in 2) Back up your system - using something like CCC - I now have a bootable SL
system - which I can run my remaining power pc apps on when I need them, which isn't
often... 3) icloud mucked up my calendars - not entirely sure which option I clicked
to muck it up - probably "merge calendars with icloud" - either way I got loads of
duplicates. Got round this by deleting all my calendars on iOS devices, mac and icloud,
then importing the back up from the SL drive so i only had one on my mac - then uploaded
that one to icloud and synced other devices - bit of a faff but working like a treat
now...
Oh - and i don't use it but iDVD died in the update aswell - apparently
i have an old version - from tiger - if you use it i might be worth checking.
Hope that is of some help!

Thanks a million for the replies. OK - I had hoped to see a general OK on this - but
clearly there are still bugs to sort out so I'll leave upgrading to Lion for now.
FYI (and for anyone owning an O1V96 with mLan) - the issue is - Yamaha have just
told me that they have stopped supporting mLan completely. An O1V96 with mLan is my main
computer Audio interface into my MBP - and since I'm configuring all of this essentially
for the first time on this new MBP, I need to do it right, once.
Yamaha
support told me they'd kindly talk me though getting the mLan driver working with my MBP
when I get round to linking them - appearently it's a bit of a hack but can be made to
work even though a little tricky even on OSX 10.6. So I had hoped to upgrade to 10.7, be
done with it, and then talk to Yamaha to get the mLan driver working once and for all
(atleast until 10.8!). If I stay on 10.6 and talk to Yamaha, I may have to do the whole
mLan driver 'hack' again once I upgrade the OS.
Anyway, if the broad consensus
here is to stay on 10.6 I had better stick to that. I'm pretty annoyed with Yamaha for
dropping mLan support now that they've released an O1V96 with USB - I would have hoped
they'd have supported mLan in basic driver update mode for some time yet given the number
of legacy Yamaha digital mixers out there (admittedly mLan never took off but it works
well and offers 16 chnnels in and 16 channels out to the MBP) - and there are quite a
number of legacy users. Alternatively, Yamaha sould arguably release a USB I/O card for
existing legacy digital mixers - but alas they seem to have largely abandoned their entire
existing user base in favour of new O1V96-USB sales. I must temper any criticism however
as Yamaha-Kemble support has always been truly fabulous for me (on a large range of issues
as I'm a heavy Yamaha user) and as said they have offered to talk me though getting this
going at a time of my convenience.
If only OSX Lion were given a clean bill of
health, I could get this going now and once, and at least extend the useful audio I/O life
of this O1V96 for a few more years.
Thanks again fro all your comments
and pointers - much appreciated. Kevin.

Hello,
From my personal experience absolutely do not upgrade to Lion! I'm
usually a big supporter of Apple and their fabulous products but for me Lion has been a
very naughty cat!
It's not that things don't work but it is so
sssssssllllllllooooooowwwwwwwww. I did the upgrade from the App store as recommended for
my late 2011 MacBook Pro (2.3Ghz, 8Gb RAM, 750GB 7,200rpm HD etc) and everything takes
absolutely ages.
New email? 5 secs. Opening Safari? A minute. iPhoto? So slow
and buggy it's a joke. Logic works fine but from talking to friends who are pros at this
stuff they told me that something to do with the upgrade process wrecks something in the
hard drive firmware which is why I'm suffering so much. Only a fresh install on a freshly
formatted drive or indeed a new drive entirely was advised. Frankly with all the software
I would have to re-install and register etc this will probably take days and I really
don't have the appetite!
If anybody out there can advise me differently I
would love to hear from them too but if you're happy with 10.6.8 stick with it because for
my money it's by far Apple's best system yet. Fast and stable.
I really only
upgraded because of iOS5, iCloud etc and honestly it's no great shakes just yet. There's a
few cool things but boy do I still regret it and it's been about 4 months now.
A terrible, wholly un-Mac experience! I have 10.6.8 on a back up drive and it's still
great.
I hope this helps and seriously if anyone out there can help me improve
my situation without the dreaded days of software installation that most likely lie ahead
I'd be thrilled to hear from them!
Best wishes and hoping this message isn't
too late!
Beardy.

I don't doubt your system's slow, for some reason. But I don't for one minute believe the
explanation that the "upgrade process wrecks something in the hard drive firmware".

I know, right? I thought that too. It does seem unlikely. But the guy I asked really knows
his onions too. I wonder what else it could be? I mean there's just no real reason for it.
There's plenty of HD space, plenty of RAM. Nothing much different form my Snow Leopard
drive and yet it is painful to use. My friend said he had this too but did the clean
install (also a brand new but identical drive) and it was back to how it should be. He
also said he'd read that Apple was trying to keep this one a bit hush hush. That there's a
problem with the automatic update process form Snow Leopard to Lion. Again, just repeating
what I'm hearing but the facts are right in front of me as I type!
I'd be very
happy to hear some alternative theories or indeed success stories on this subject because
I'm sure I'm not alone!
Any thoughts?
Cheers,
Paul.

They're dropping a fair amount of models too: Quote:
Mountain Lion will only run on the
following Macs:
iMac (mid 2007 or later) MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, 2008),
(13-inch, Early 2009 or later) MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch,
2.4/2.2 GHz), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later) MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later) Mac
Mini (Early 2009 or later) Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later) Xserve (Early 2009)
This means the following Macs which are supported under OS X Lion will not be able
to run Mountain Lion (model identifiers in parentheses):
Late 2006 iMacs
(iMac5,1, iMac5,2, iMac6,1) All plastic MacBooks that pre-date the unibody redesign
(MacBook2,1, MacBook3,1, MacBook4,1) MacBook Pros released prior to June 2007
(MacBookPro2,1, MacBookPro2,2) The original MacBook Air (MacBookAir1,1) The
Mid-2007 Mac mini (Macmini2,1) The original Mac Pro and its 8-core 2007 refresh
(MacPro1,1, MacPro2,1) Late 2006 and Early 2008 Xserves (Xserve1,1, Xserve2,1)

I have been following the paradigm (fashioned from my past experiences) that I don't
upgrade a Mac OS until the X.X.3 revision. Every time I've upgraded prior that version,
I've paid the price in various ways, mostly in lost productivity. Since Lion just crossed
that threshold, I installed it on my server and it works great. But I did make sure that
every single one of my connected peripherals and software was compatible prior to
upgrading.
On the other hand, I'm still nervous about installing it on my music
machines, of which I have 6. Basically, my Snow Leopard machines are doing everything I
need them to do: running WaveLab and Nuendo. For me, there hasn't been a feature of Lion
that is compelling enough to upgrade. However, I'll probably have to do it eventually. To
that end, I will use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a backup of my OS drives prior to
installation. That way, if I encounter a compatibility brick wall, I can just go back and
keep working.

I am going back to SL just doing my MBP as a trail run:
Wipe drive from
utility
Use original disc to instal
Problem one: it says can't use
this drive (yellow bang on the mac HDD) solution go up to utilities and re-erase HDD (it
still has a bit of lion sitting there)
Now SL will install.
