Nuendo/Kontakt MIDI velocity controller new
      #966203 - 24/01/12 09:40 PM
Hello.

In Nuendo, as you will know, the velocity is recorded as you play a MIDI instrument, and of course this is traditionally intended to affect the volume of each note. However, I make my own sample instruments for Kontakt 4, and when putting a track together (rather than performing) I prefer to use the velocity simply to trigger different samples (rather than round robin) so I can be certain of the final rendition (round robin introduces slightly different renditions). However, Nuendo also seems to affect the volume of the sample when it doesn't need to because they are already recorded at the correct volume for each velocity range. I know this because when the velocity is set close to 0, nothing sounds. But (in this case) I just want the bottom sample to be triggered when the velocity is between 0 and 5 (or whatever) and just to sound a the level it was recorded (already quiet).

Do I do this in Kontakt somehow or is the problem with Nuendo?

Thanks

P.S. I'm not sure if a question on MIDI should go here, as it's not strictly a recording technique or a mixing/mastering issue. Perhaps there should be a section for MIDI and sampling since it forms a major part of modern music creation?

I would say this is a Kontakt matter. I use Battery and I can assign several samples to a cell and set different velocities for each sound in the cell, but the velocity to volume is set using a separate modulation parameter. I would guess that you can remove the velocity to volume parameter somewhere in Kontakt, but I've no experience of the programme to be able to help you.

Yes I found it in the Kontakt 'Instrument' popup, where you can untick/tick a box that asks if you want Kontakt to accept MIDI velocity and panning information from the host.

Thanks
