Warning: An interesting problem with Thunderbolt cables! new
      #968372 - 04/02/12 11:57 PM
Well: not actually a Thunderbolt cable as such. I bought an iWires mini Dvi to HDMI cable so I could watch "Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy", (which a work colleague described as slow and I found very well crafted) and "Columbiana" (which has a plot that leaks like a sieve and is frankly mediocre), using my iMac as a DVD player to my telly...

Despite the port design which should only allow such a cable to go in only one way: it will go in either way.

Beware!

At the Thunderbolt/iMac end.

The Thunderbolt port doubles as the display out on new iMacs.

Ah right, I was thrown by the reference to mini DVI.

You thinking of Mini DisplayPort ?

( not the same as the older Mini-DVI )

I do not know why they got rid of the old port, really.

No you have to buy a big screen iMac I guess if you want to run a big screen for video plus a Thunderbolt sound card.

I have a 27" quad core imac, great machine, but the panel is where they save the money, resolution is great obviously, but the screen is awful in every other respect, uniformity, banding, terrible motion handling, they are NOT good screens. I can post examples if you like and links to forums with pages and pages of complaints.

Or you could just trust me

Or look for yourself

The panels Apple use in the standalone screens are very different to the ones they build into imacs...

Watching new films from HD - were the copies of those films legal?

Good point. Watching films whilst on your Harley-Davidson could well be dangerous, and probably illegal.

Already have. The screen on my 27" iMac is a thing of wonder and beauty. Maybe I'm lucky, or maybe you're not?

So when you are looking at this very screen, you have a totally uniform flat grey around this window?
with none of this:

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=imac+screen+uneven+lighting&hl=en& ;prmd=imvnsfd&source=lnms&tbm=isch&ei=x_48T4zoCcTv8QPRmsC1CA&sa=X&oi=m ode_link&ct=mode&cd=2&sqi=2&ved=0CAwQ_AUoAQ&biw=2559&bih=1304

And if you restart your machine, and the screen goes white, it is absolutely flat and even?

As good as or better than any other monitor I've seen (and believe me, as a computer programmer for the last quarter century I've seen a lot). Not particularly inclined to argue this one, though, just pointing out that this is one of those situations where, as our American friends would say, Your Mileage May Vary.
