Best Logic Book For A Starter

A friend of mine wants to learn Logic coming from an Ableton background. I haven't got
time to teach him.
Could anyone recommend a good book or tutorial (online or
otherwise) for him?
Many thanks.

Hi I'm not sure about books. Personally, I learn a lot more when being shown
how to do something. So a couple of ideas: 1. For Free: The online master
SFLogicNinja. The guy behind it has given up doing the freebies. But the back catalogue
helped one of my friends get up to speed very quickly http://www.youtube.com/user/SFLogicNinjaSoundsLogical and
NextStepAudio are two other very good tutors on youtube. There's another good highly in
depth series if I can remember the name I will post. There are hundreds of youtube tutes.
Some really don't know what they are doing though 2. MacProVideo: http://www.macprovideo.com/Not too expensive. Try a 1 or 3
month subscription. There is a lot of Logic basics on there 3: Online Private
Tuition : I keep meaning to get some more advanced lessons from this tutor I'm not affiliated to any of the above. One of them will surely suite your friend's
learning style Nick

Ableton MIDI is unreliable - hence the switch.

I think it's been referenced already but I'd DEFINITELY go to peach pit press.com and
check out the books and ebooks. The one to look for is the Apple Certified Books - Logic
Express / Studio. There's a standard book and an advanced one. What is great about these
(apart from being used by ALL Apple staff to teach them these pro apps) is that they are
really clear and methodical. They are broken down into lessons which tell you how long
they'll take (e.g.. 45 mins etc); plus they come with exercise files etc so you can follow
along. Really highly recommended.
Of course, the macro videos and those on
Lynda.com are great too. I like vids but I learn best with methodical=style books.
Hope this helps.

The book to which you are referring is David Nahmani's book, which I recommended and
linked to in my above post.
David is also the moderator over at LogicProHelp,
which happens to be the best online forums for Logic, and will happily answer questions
about the book. Plus there are lots of nice *ahem* guys over there who hang out and help
with Logic issues...

Yep, it's kind of *the* book for learning Logic.
Stephen Bennett's book is also
worth a look too, you can find that on Peachpit and Amazon as well.

Ableton MIDI unreliable ?
Hm. Possibly dumb question: are you sure it's the
DAW that is at fault here ? I have never had a MIDI error on Ableton. On the other hand,
you are probably more of a MIDI ninja than I am, and perhaps drive it harder.

If he's a heavy MIDI user, he should also look at Cubase before deciding which DAW to move
to.

2 colleagues:
One has an 808, the
other a Linn Drum. Both asked for my help with syncing them to Ableton.
You'd
think sending MIDI clock to their respective peripherals would be a basic, working
implementation. But it isn't and searching online reveals Ableton are aware of this.
Some software updates later, still no joy for either set up.
I brought both
machines (and their sync boxes) to my project studio to verify they are indeed working as
should. Plugged them into a $5 MIDI interface and hit the spacebar in Logic. All good.
Took the machines back, told one of the guys to switch to logic (he had a copy through his
business anyway). Same MIDI interface, same Mac, different DAW = different result.
Sad but true.
@ EW: He already has Logic.

That Nahmani book is pretty good - be aware there are two, one for the basics and one with
more advanced content - though I haven't got the latter, so can't comment. I've
been using some video tutorials I got free with an SOS sub renewal a couple of years ago -
they're made by ASK Video, and are really easy to follow, comprehensive, and clear. They
can be bought on DVD or downloaded, and there are regular special offers (just had a
half-price offer last weekend) so I recommend those too. Link: ASK Logic tutorials
