Dropbox- Safe for DAW? new
      #971706 - 22/02/12 07:28 PM
So, now that with W7 more and more people have their DAW's connected to the internet, being one of them, I am getting tempted to install Dropbox in my DAW PC. I feel it will be safer than plugging USB sticks which in my experience are the no.1 danger of getting viruses etc.

Has anyone installed Dropbox in his/her DAW?
I am worrying that because of the nature of the app it's possible to have clicks and pops while working with your sequencer.
Then again, it might be totally fine.

Anyone wants to share his experience?

Thanks

Yup.

No problems here. Obviously every PC is going to be different and my experience is no guarantee of yours, but there's little harm trying installing (after securing an image copy of your system drive, obviously!) and seeing how it works for you. If it causes problems then uninstall it, or re-instate the drive image.

Just installed it and can't say I observe anything out of the ordinary.
Just during installation the explorer disappeared and appeared again...
Well, it seems fine for the time being, thanks for the replies.

Ties in nicely with an appropriate phone as well.

Dropbox has worked well for me, though it's rather slow. Here's a similar online storage system that currently seems to be more nippy:
https://www.wuala.com/en

I wouldn't dream of running a program that streamed huge amounts of data to the Internet WHILE working in a DAW. Don't set DropBox to start automatically. Work as usual. Afterwards, copy anything that needs sharing into the DropBox folder. When synch has completed, stop the DropBox process.

Obviously autorun should be disabled for ANY inserted media (is it enabled as standard? I hope not!). Apart from that, have you really found malware jumps off a USB stick and bites you when transferring data files?

I think it's fine. It does have an option that lets you set it not to run when computer starts so that's great!
I have very nasty experiences with USB sticks. You don't even need to transfer files, there are some viruses that live in the autorun of the USB flash drive. The worst thing is that you won't be able to open your hard drive and see their contents. So I'd rather be safe than sorry...

Which is why, like I said, autorun should be disabled. Where else in our wonderful world of computing would you be fool enough to connect media and say "just run any exe file you fancy without asking, will you?" Give yourself a chance!

My problem with usb sticks is being lazy and forgetting that just because it's USUALLY ok to pull it out without the "Safely remove" routine, it won't be when the data is REALLY important :-)_

I been using Dropbox for a while for works on postproduction on protools.
It has been flawless. The sound designer that I work with ties it with me so we can work together. When he finish his work on the session, it send me a message so I can work on that same session. (Not at the same time)
We can work together and we maintain synchronize our sessions.

Regards

Dropbox works perfectly, let it run in the background all the time.
