Monitor Position new
      #972325 - 26/02/12 12:28 AM
I am reading Mike Senior's book, Mixing Secrets, and decided to purchase a set of single driver speakers (Fostex 6301s) as recommended in the book. They compliment my nearfield speakers, Hafler 8 Transnova. As said, the Fostex are single driver speakers. Does this mean that they do not need to be at ear level as nearfields need to be? In other words, is there any dramatic change in sound as a listener moves vertically? Obviously, horizontal movements will effect the stereo image.

Alll non-point-source speakers -- which means everything in the real world -- become progressively more directional with increasing frequency.

So the short answer is yes, the single-driver speakers still need to aimed towards your ears when in the listening position, although you may well find that there is a slightly greater degree of latitude than with two-way designs.

6301s are remarkably nice little boxes in their way, I have a few that I use for utility boxes, adhoc dressing room and paging intercoms and things of like nature.

Like Hugh says you will want the box at ear level (more or less).

If you get second hand ones like I did, there is a subtle gotcha in that you may well end up with units fitted with 'LNE' connectors for power (Most of the ex BBC stuff comes with these), they are not really compliant electrically for use in a domestic environment (and worse the plastic in the line side connector is prone to de-plasticise with age and crumble), give the mating halves a close inspection and ideally put them on a megger before use (or replace with powercon).

Canford have an own brand clone that is somewhat cheaper new IIRC.

Regards, Dan.
