Atari Cubase Midex SMPTE out new
      #958874 - 14/12/11 02:23 AM
I'm trying to sync my DAW to my Atari using SMPTE. I'm running Cubase 3.02 and a Midex+. No matter how I set the 'Synchronization' settings I can't seem to get a SMPTE signal from my Midex+ when Cubase's transport is running. I know the Midex+ works because I can click 'start' in 'write SMPTE' and watch my MOTU's SMPTE console tick along.

Is there a way to make Cubase generate SMPTE on the fly as it's playing my stuff or have I misunderstood the way these things work?

Am I supposed to run SMPTE off the DAW to keep the Atari in sync?

Can I do both?

Please help.

I think the idea was to generate SMPTE in the Midex+, record it to a track of your tape machine, then use the signal back from tape to clock the system.

Can't you use MIDI clock to do what you need? Did the Atari support Midi Time Code?

MTC MIDI Time Code is what I used with my setup during the 1990s, with the Atari as the slave device.

Yes. Record the SMPTE signal to your DAW and then run it back into the Atari. That's the way we used to do it. Lordy, it was all kinds of fun...

For why? As long as Midex/Cubase puts out a healthy signal direct to tape, and can then read it back it's virtually twit proof.
I still use that system but with Notator/Unitor and it's ideal and hassle free.
Why shouldn't it be the same with a DAW?

Best wishes,
Dave.

Cheers, in the end I realised MTC was what I needed. I sync the atari to the PC and it seems happy enough. I thought my MOTU would output SMPTE sync on a dedicated output but I think this must be a mac only feature as neither sonar nor live seem to support this feature. MTC works well enough though.
