Macbook Pro - 8Gb or 16GB total? I'm confused?

I have the Macbook Pro 15" 2.2Ghz i7 with 8GB, and have been told that its the latest MBP
from last April 2011.
Its a fast machine, but now I see on websites, and Mac
Retailers that they are now bundling this Macbook Pro with 16Gb RAM?
So Can i
go with 16Gb?
I'm looking at forums also and they say "Yes the MacBook
Pro “15 2011 model (Model ID: MacBookPro8,2) can accept up to 16GB of memory."
Mine is :

Update : was told by a woman at Apple that this isn't possible with my model and 16GB,
even though all the websites say that it is?? Anyway did a quick google to
Crucial, and looked up my Macbook Pro : "MacBook Pro 2.2GHz Intel Core i7
(15-inch DDR3) Early-2011" Their specs now say : "DDR3 PC3-10600 Memory Type: DDR3 PC3-10600, DDR3 (non-ECC) Maximum Memory: 16GB Slots: 2 Each memory slot can hold DDR3 PC3-10600 with a maximum of 8GB per slot." Again this says 16Gb total? The Apple 'lady' said she thinks not? Did i get
someone's mum at Apple manning the online chat and she could be wrong?

So according to http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/specs.htmlit's 8GB max, but I'm
not sure whether that's just because Apple don't supply 8GB sticks, or whether it's a
genuine limitation of the system...

Hmm thanks, so now I'm confused as Apple say no (or not sure) but you might be right and
it dooesnt support more than 8GB Sticks??
I'm still a bit confused?

Just done the crucial scan, with their own software and it says :
Memory:
DDR3 PC3-10600

Currently Installed Memory: 8GB

Available Memory Slots: 0
4GB

manufacturer supported memory.
This 15" system may utilize one of the

So again this is
saying it can take 16GB?
Are apple saying no, as you say because they don't do
8GB sticks, and they want me to buy from them, or is it cause of the compatibility issues?
and stability?
Anyone else using 16Gb in MBP 2011 early 2.2Ghz i7?

Apple are even saying that their biggest fastest MBP on the planet :
17-inch:
2.4 GHz i7
2.4GHz quad-core
Intel Core i7
Apple are saying that this
is maximum of 8GB which I find hard to believe, and I've definetly seen this for sale at
Jigsaw24 etc etc with 16Gb?

It's quite common for Apple's official spec to give a maximum RAM ability, but have the
hardware exceed this.
For instance, my old 2008 MBP has an official limit of
4GB, but it can actually take 6GB (but not 8GB, which doesn't work). And I have 6GB in
it.
Do your research, ignore Apple (they are just quoting you the standard
official specs), and if the general concencus of the internets says this machine works
with XXGB without problems, then you should be fine.

Thanks Desmond, I had no idea about all this, and thought Apple was in stone.. 16Gb on a Macbook Pro sounds good, and Crucial are saying thats the case!

Of course not Johnny!  But, I do run a couple of programs at once all the time (Ableton and Reaper) and also I
run Parallels as a VM with Windows as another program, so if I can, and its stable, maybe
for the price, the 16Gb would be beneficial? I never just run say, Logic with
plug ins, and thats it...

It's exceptionally rare that you'll need more than 8gb of RAM. Check your Activity Monitor if you're
not sure. If you don't already have an SSD, fit one in place of the optical
drive - you'll see a massive performance increase for all sorts of tasks. After CPU
performance, hard drive speed is the main bottleneck in modern PCs.
