Suggestions for Piano/Synth Keyboard

Hi Daughter recently started learning keyboard and got to a stage where we want to
replace my crusty old Evolution MK149. It's got to fulfill her purpose (piano) but I also
want to use it for my own nefarious purposes
The criteria are:
Decent piano sound Built in speakers (for portability) MIDI Weighted
keys After touch
I've had a look at a few Casios but none seem to have
MIDI. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Around £300 but higher suggestions welcome. However, it's safe to say the wife will veto
all beautiful Nord keyboards

Don't be so sure. Show her lots and
lots of battered, ugly, synths and keyboards. Then start using key phrases such as 'That
would look AMAZING in the living room'...
Once she starts panicking, show her
the Nord Range

I'm beginning to get the feeling that you've tried this approach before Andy Martin

There's not going be a lot
around that ticks all of those boxes. A separate amp would widen the options quite a lot.
Were you looking for a full-size (88-note) keyboard like the Yamaha P250...?
(What Casios were you looking at...? I'd be surprised if they were selling digital
pianos without MIDI.)

We wanted something we could move easily around the house, quick
and simple to turn on and get going hence the built in speakers. Not looking for a
full size keyboard but 49 key minimum. I don't know the models of the Casios I was
looking at as I was mainly looking round the back at the ports but they were cheapies -
around the £150 mark.

I would recommend second-hand too, though I am not a specialist for pianos with built-in
speakers. Otherwise, the Yamaha P-series, the Korg SP series and the Roland RD / FP series
are usually good 88-key stage pianos.
When it comes to new gear, maybe
you can have a look at these:
Yamaha P-95 (decent piano sound, built-in
speakers, good key feeling, lightweight for a 88-key hammer action keyboard; no line out
connector, only headphones)
Yamaha Piaggero series, the NP-31 for example (only
76 keys, but very light, and comes with built-in speakers; never tried it)
Roland, Korg and others should make some similar products too!
Bear in
mind that most built-in speakers will not be so good. You may plug the keyboard to a hi-fi
system or something similar when it is possible.

Thanks Bob, those Yamaha's look like they will do the job.
Also, came across
the Casio CDP-100 which is a bit more in the price range.

just a word of note - those new yamaha p11/p31 keyboards are very plasticky! i tried one
the other day and they are more like a normal synth action but with waterfall keys. they
have lots of unnecessary movement (sideways) which doesn't inspire confidence. the black
keys in particular have an odd feel about them. the blurb on the p31 mentions 'graded'
action but i couldn't discern any difference between bass and treble keys...
yes, they are cheap but i can only think you would be looking to replace it in another
year or so?
i eventually opted for a novation impulse 61 controller - still not
weighted but a much nicer action than the yamaha and all the controller goodness too!
